• Draconic Anatomy & Physiology

  Darkarma's, as a rule, all based their Dragons upon Dungeons & Dragons rules for them. They have the most complete A&P, and information on dragons. Some modifications were necessary to make them playable characters, and to balance them out a little. What follows is a cut down version of the Draconomicon.
  
  

  A Dragon's body

  
  
  Physical - At first glance a dragon resembles a reptile. It has a long, powerfully muscled body, a long, thick neck, a horned or frilled head with a toothy mouth, and sinuous tail. The creature walks on powerful legs with taloned feet and flies on bat like wings. It is also covered from muzzle to tail tip in scales but that will come later. Dragons in build and movement are more feline then reptilian.
  
  Eyes - At first glance the dragon's eyes are slitted like a feline's. If one were to look very closely at a dragon's eye however one could see a second iris and pupil in the first. The dragon can shift and rotate the inner aperture up to 90 degrees, so that the inner pupil can over lay the outer one or lie at a right angle to it. This gives the dragon a extremely accurate depth perception and focusing ability no matter how much or how little light is available. The dragon's eye is protected by three lids, one used for burrowing or flying, one for swimming and the last a protective leathery covering. The dragon can use the two lids in tandem to protect against sudden flashes of light. The dragon's eyes also glow in the dark but it can douse this by closing one or two of it's inner lids, this does not affect the dragon's sight.
  
  Ears - A dragon's ears usually are indistinguishable from the other frills on it's body. The spines are able to move in a nearly 360 degree scope and are very apt as any human's could be at catching even the smallest of noises. Aquatic dragons usually have protective fringes over the ear holes.
  
  Teeth and Mouth - A dragon's mouth is full of sharp teeth and a forked tongue. The exact number of teeth and sharpness depend on age. The dragon's teeth usually consist of four incisor like fangs that are used like spears in killing the prey along with small, cap like molars. The dragon can take prey, while in it's mouth and shift the jaw (Or shake it's head) to use the molars like saws which easily cut through flesh and bone alike. Most boast that a dragon's mouth is like that of an alligators or crocodile's, that holding it closed is a small feat. This is a myth and one attempting to hold a dragon's mouth closed will need to be a very strong individual indeed. It is true though that the dragon applies more force when closing the jaws then opening.
  
  Scales - Dragon scales are considered to be one of the most durable things in the world. At birth the dragon's scales are some-what flimsy but as they age they become thicker. Usually, unless heavily damaged, dragons do not shed their skin or scales. This is because the regeneration of the scales usually heals cracked or otherwise damaged ones rather quickly. At first glance a dragon looks to have no scales at all other then on his muzzle and claws. The scales interlock so proficiently that they give the skin a pebbly or smooth texture depending on race. Even when the dragon has gorged themselves on food the skin stretches, where as it's usually wrinkled under the scales, the scales still present no affordable flesh to a weapon. Dragon hide is also very tough but is lacking compared to the scales. Once a dragon has reached the adult size bracket their scales are fully developed (but will continue to grow thicker as time goes on) and can turn aside all but magic weapons easily, even magic weapons will begin to have troubles as the dragon continues to age.
  
  
  
  

  Senses

  
  
  Scent - A dragon's ability to smell is as well refined as it's eyesight. Usually tasting the air with it's tongue while taking it in with it's nostrils. It is very hard to catch a dragon unawares by this. This also makes hiding from a dragon nearly impossible.
  
  Ears - The dragon's ears are some-what human like when it comes to sound. Though they are a bit more sensitive, able to filter out other sounds and ignore some.
  
  Blind Sense - Dragons have the uncanny ability to see those who are invisible or otherwise hidden from direct view. This is accomplished by disturbances in in the air, vibrations, hearing and scent. The dragon can sense anything in it's immediate vicinity, and things like magical fog, darkness or other things that obscure it's eyes are pretty much useless.
  
  Taste - A dragon's sense of taste is very discriminating. They can tell even the most subtle differences in the taste of water or food. Most dragons develop sensitive culinary preferences as a result. Copper dragons have developed a taste for poisonous creatures. The most noted though is the red dragon's taste for young women. Curiously, Dragons don't like sweet flavors. Why is unknown to anyone but a dragon.
  
  Touch - A dragon's touch is the only sense that wanes as the dragon grows older. Younger dragons are more in tune with this but as the scales thicken touch, and the sense of something being smooth or rough is usually tested by the tongue. That is perhaps why the dragon usually sleeps upon piles of gold, weapons, armor and other such items. The prodding and poking seems to have the same affect as a nobby wool blanket for a human. Though they are still able to feel vibrations and such very easily.
  
  
  Eating Habits and Weight - Dragons normally gorge themselves if enough food is obtainable. They can eat nearly anything, from dirt and rocks to ores. The preference depends on species. Dragons never truly get fat and usually tend to be sleek for they store the excess food as elemental energy to be used later.
  
  
  Hording - Usually dragons are seen as pack rats because of their enormous 'bedding horde'. This is usually taken as greed as well. Dragons do not collect random shine-y objects but objects of great monetary value. If forced to choose out of a powerful magic item and a larger mass of gold the dragon will usually go with the gold (Even though no matter how good aligned they are they would rather have it all). Dragons get, as one would say, an 'ego' boost from the amount of their horde and also some physical pleasure from it too. (Some dragons in privet moments even roll about in their horde like a pig in mud on a hot day) At any given time a dragon could give a precise list of each and every item within it's horde and guards it like it would a family member (Depending on alignment the dragon, if forced to choose, would defend a family member over his horde any day).
  
  
  The Cold Blooded Myth - Dragons are actually Endothermic. They do not need another source of heat to warm their bodies. (Hence why white dragons can survive in cold climes)
  
  Copper Dragons - Copper Dragons are earth dragons and natural tricksters. They enjoy riddles, jokes and stories. They are some times known as the 'bards' of the dragon kin. They love to play pranks and tell jokes, though not to laugh at a joke or meet a prank with good humor will annoy them greatly. Their lairs tend to have at least one rather difficult maze in it...If not two. The copper dragons also rely more on the massive thigh and shoulder muscles they have then their wings to get around. A Copper dragon standing still, at adult age, can jump 40ft straight up into the air. They are very protective of family members, small children (and wyrmlings of goodly or neutral nature), and friends.
