Skallagrim stands rather short for a Northman, especially a hybrid, but he's as thick as an old oak and just as unbreakable. His beard and hair form an all-encompassing mane of widow's peaked salt-and-pepper, prematurely grey in spots. Numerous small braids decorate it, along with wooden beads, feathers, bones of small animals, and twigs. It looks like it hasn't been washed or brushed in years (if ever). His hair falls to just below his shoulders, left untethered, and his beard explodes from his face in a thick bush. A small badger skull is used to hold a thick chunk of the beard in place. The kinks in his huge nose indicate that it's been broken a few times, and, despite the roughness of his features, his dark little eyes are crinkled with kindness.
He has a strange look to him, and if one doesn't immediately recognize him as a half-breed, he might just appear a mutant. His face is pushed forward into a huge snoutlike nose that dominates his face, and tusks jut forward from the corners of his mouth. His ears are much larger than normal and appear malformed--pointed and with a drooping lobe. The right one is mangled from an old battle. Instead of his fingers hanging at thigh-length as a normal human's would, they go down to his knees, and a thin, hairy tail gives the occasional lash... though he tries to keep it still.
Atop his head sits the skinned head of a great white bear. Pieces of this hide are always strapped to him--how much varies with the weather. A further curiosity is the helmet sometimes nestled on top of the bear's skinned head; it is made from blackish metal with a pair of rubies for eyes, and written across the forehead in blue Norse runes is the following: I am Frost, helmet of Skallagrim, slayer of giants and champion to his people. When he's not wearing the helmet, it hangs from his belt.
Beneath the great pelt is a medley of leathers, hides, and furs, with the occasional metal plate or woolen bit. A sleeveless patchwork vest sits tightly over his torso and hangs down to his knees, held in place by a thick leather kidney belt. A metal plate is strapped over his heart. His legs bear rough, multi-layered elkskin leggings, which tuck into oiled boar-leather moccasins, lined with warm fur. The moccasins are decorated with fringes and the occasional wooden bead. This attire leaves his massive, hairy arms bared to the cold, but he never seems to notice it. Down each deltoid is a set of five prominent, vertical scars, as if made by an animal. Below them on both arms are crude, dark brown tattoos. On the right arm, there is a bear with an elk in its mouth. On the left arm, there is an elk goring a bear through the heart. Both are heavily stylized and obviously both very old and done with primitive techniques, leading them to be quite faded and blurry. -
