So what exactly is a Furcadia? I've never heard of it in my years of rping..yet its so common here
Sanne Moderator

Furcadia is an online roleplaying game.

http://www.furcadia.com/

It's a pixelated game where you can walk around with an avatar that you can customize the colors and a description of. People click on you, they see your icon and your description. There's a textbox in the game where you can write posts (both in-character (as your character) and out-of-character (as yourself)). These posts appear to the people who are with you on the same screen (so if you walk away form them, they stop hearing you). The game has many player-built worlds inside of it, which are called 'Dreams'. You can visit these, as many have their own stories and settings that you can join.

Furcadia is a largely furry-based community, although they also cater to non-furry players. :) You can sign up and have 10 characters for free (just like RPR) and even buy new avatars and a sponsorship which gives you additional perks.

Many of us, including Kim, Copper_Dragon, myself and various others, play or played Furc. Kim created RPR because many of her roleplaying friends were looking for a better alternative to host their characters' profiles. Eventually many people on Furcadia started hosting their profiles on RPR and roleplay in Furcadia. It's why you see so many profiles tagged with it.

Does that answer your question?

It does answer my question but sadly doesn't look appealing at all as agame in my opinion. I may skip over most of the furry stuff though..

I was never into anthropomorphic characters personally, but I loved Furcadia because it gives you the ability to reskin EVERYTHING about it in such a way that other players can see it too, and to set up custom maps, which are PERFECT for creating whatever RP setting you need.

It's not so much a "game," as there aren't really goals or points, so much as a glorified chat box that lets you set up maps and move avatars and props, which can be massively massively helpful for keeping track of where everything is in a RP.

People are also able to create games in their Dreams through the tools offered. I've played some checkers, avatar tag, raced horses, went on boat rides and more. :)
Wait so this is a one line role play game? AWESOME! I might try it o3o

Hi, I'm involved a lot with Furcadia. Furcadia is a social game that is unlike other MMOs. It's the original sandbox game. ;P You can create your own custom maps using totally custom items and other graphics. It even has an easy-to-use scripting language so you can code unique effects into your map, even very complicated games. I've made whack-a-mole, racing games, paintball, and even an entire pet dragon simulator game. Furcadia's very old, created in 1996, and it does show its age at times. But currently we're undergoing a huge transformation as we build our web client. All of the art is getting enlarged to 2x size for more details and to be done in full color+transparency instead of 8-bit color! There is a premium human avatar, but dreams can be patched to have whatever species (including humans and tons of other player-made things) you want for free.

As for roleplaying, that's only one aspect of the game. People will build maps that are roleplaying continuities that people can join and RP in real-time. I know with the game being redone, we're trying to make it easier to connect RPers to groups that they love. A lot of Furcadians who own RP maps will have RPR groups, so you can look around on here, too!

Here's the little site I made for my dragon sim game. http://screamingnorth.com/islesofiridia/ I don't keep the map uploaded to the game regularly, but if you're interested in playing it, just PM me. :) There are also volunteers called Welcomers that can give you a tour of the game.

It is literally impossible to "lose" Furcadia. There are no points, there are no lives, there is no way to "die." Whatever type of sandbox game you are thinking of, this is sandboxier.

The only way to lose, I suppose, would be to be socially abrasive such that no one will play with you, same as it is here.

It is mostly about the roleplay, and having a description available of your character aswell as a small portrait icon. Im playing it since (oh god) 2002 .... I feel so old now.

Like Heimdall, I'm heavily involved with Furcadia (go team Pixels!). The game is old, yes, but the development team is in the process of updating all of the graphics to be 32-bit. The entire system is getting a ground-up overhaul, with the code being redone from scratch. It's very cool!

As far as the furry stuff, fear not! I'm not into anthro/furry subjects, myself, and I'm still hugely into the community. I actually run an 18+ (for mature topics/violence etc.) human/supernatural community in the game with huge success. (I won't plug it here, but I reference it to demonstrate that there is a sizable contingent of human-oriented RPers!) We get about 50 people during slow times, and as many as just over 100 at our peak. So, there's certainly a demand for it, and options beyond anthro stuff.

As Heimdall says, a lot of us have RPR groups on here. You can see us in the Furcadia game tag! :)

The game is also adding humans as a default avatar option with the major graphical update they're doing. Though they're not released, contributors to the fundraiser can see the cool concept art and such on the development newsletter. Exciting stuff!

All in all, if you love to write, it's well worth giving Furcadia a chance. I started eleven years ago, and I don't regret it at all. I've met a lot of amazing writers and wonderful people. :)
