So I have recently been considering something to boost my characters slots. They have times, like "For a month" or "For two months". My question is, when the time limit is up, do the characters get deleted? If so, is there any point in me buying something with real life money and work hard on creating a character only for it to be deleted a month later?
We have different types of upgrades, each with their own benefits!
1. Epic membership (renewable!)
You get 10 extra character slots for the duration of your Epicness PLUS tons of other perks! So, if you have 1 month of Epicness, you have those 10 editable slots for 1 month. When the 1 month is up, your extra characters are NOT deleted. By order of creation, the most recently added characters that exceed the 10 free slots just become locked from being edited (and any custom templates are reverted back to free ones) until you either renew your Epicness, delete the excess or get permanent slots. 2. Permanent character slots
These are different than Epic slots and can be purchased here. They are simply permanent additions to your account, they never expire. If you're not interested in the Epic perks and want to make sure you can edit your extra characters forever, this is the upgrade you're looking for!
3. Epicness and Permanent slots stack
For example, this is what my account looks like:
This means I always have 10 free slots + 41 permanent slots. I only lose 10 slots when my Epicness expires.

There isn't any point in you spending your money to create something that is deleted a month later! That's why we don't ever delete characters that work has gone into, as Sanne explained.
You can even continue to post messages with "locked" characters, so your RPs aren't even interrupted. It just means that when those slots expire, you won't be able to do any updates to that profile until you unlock the slot (in whatever way you want to do that. Sanne did a good job of covering the many different ways, so I won't repeat her!) 
If you don't want your purchased slots to ever expire or lock, then steer clear of the potions and wands and go for the enchanted cloak or the dragon's tooth instead. The slots those give are for forever.
