So, I've used this before and adapted it from a D&D wiki. I think it'll be fun to see what some people come up with for their characters!

1. AmputeeYou are missing a body part. You may choose which. If you choose fingers/toes, you must choose at least six.

2. AsthmaticYour character suffers a respiratory condition, causing frequent shortness of breath.

3. AurophiliaYou love gold. If you hear of gold or see gold, you must covet it. Get creative with how your character goes about “dealing with” this craving.

4. AurophobiaYour character has an irrational fear of the color gold. Even yellow isn’t okay. The sun is scary, we’re lucky it’s so far away!

5. Bad SeedYour character is tainted by evil. You may take this as you like, but they must be compelled to commit evil acts. If they do not commit these acts, you (they) must at least acknowledge them

6. Binding ContractYour character has been cursed by a powerful deity to be bound to a specific item. They must remain close to the object (roll 1d100 to decide how many feet you may travel from the object), or they will fall victim to bouts of sickness and fatigue that will never end in death. This item can be carried by another person, and may be anything (jewelry, a piece of paper, etc)

7. Blind, partiallyYour character suffers from vision loss, though is not entirely blind. They can see, but not well. Play with this as you like.

8. BlindYour character is completely blind.

9. CallousYour character is brash, abbrasive, and unaware of personal boundaries.

10. ChivalrousFor whatever reason you decide (except “they are weaker opponents and not worthy of battle”), you do not fight women

11. Chronic DiseaseYour character suffers a chronic, uncurable ailment of your own design (or you may pick a real-world ailment).

12. ClumsinessYour character is extremely clumsy. They are not the most dextrous, and are accident-prone.

13. Cold-BloodedYour character cannot tolerate heat (5d12 to decide their highest functional temperature, add 20 to decide extreme, life-threatening conditions)

14. Command WordYour character has a secret command word that, when heard, will send them into “sleeper mode”, forcing them to do the bidding, no matter how reluctant they are, of whomever commands them (they MAY OR MAY NOT be conscious while carrying out this act, but MUST carry out the act. You can decide the command word, but must remember it and react to it when it is spoken in-character).

15. Compulsive KillerYour character easily jumps to violence when they are crossed. They plan to kill anyone they deem a threat, or simply in their way. They do not have to be unreasonable about this, and may deviate from their compulsive nature by plotting out a way to kill the target without being caught, but they must make an attempt on the target’s life.

16. CowardYour character is not a brave one. They frighten easily.

17. Cubic VisionAnything round will disturb your character. Everything must be nice, neat, and square.

18. Dark PremonitionYour character sees disturbing prophecies in their sleep/meditation, often resulting in emotional weakness. These prophecies do not always come true.

19. Deadly StrengthNo matter what your character’s intentions are, his/her attacks are always at maximum strength, and always deal damage, even with an open hand. They cannot “play fight”. They also tend to bend coins, break fine, expensive china, among other valuables, and have been known to give hugs that are just a little too tight.

20. DeafYour character is deaf.

21. DenseAlthough ordinary in size, your character is much heavier than most of its kind.

22. DirectionlessYour character has no sense of direction. They cannot get anywhere without the help of another character, even with a map and compass. Directions are useless to him/her, and even setting out more than 5 feet he or she will become completely lost. (If you get lost without any hope of being found, roll 1d2, which is a coin toss, to see if you can circle back to a familiar location).

23. DwarfismYour character is very short for their species and age. (Let’s hope you’re not already a tiny character!)

24. DyslexiaAlthough your character learned to read and write, reading can be difficult, and writing is commonly misspelled.

25. EpilepsyYour character is epileptic, and will suffer a spell if confronted with bright flashing lights or short, overwhelmingly loud repetetive sounds (such as a siren or techno music).

26. Esophilic EsophagitisYour character has an inability to hold down his or her food, resulting in frailness and fatigue.

27. ExhibitionistYour character likes to get naked, ESPECIALLY when meeting new people! He or she will be compelled to strip all gear and clothes from his or her body when encountering a new entity. If there are children (or equivalent) around, the compulsion is lessened.

28. Family CurseSomeone in your character’s lineage pissed off the wrong big, bad, evil guy, and now your character, and your character’s family, suffers a curse (of your own design).

29. Fear of MagicYour character is absolutely terrified of anything that cannot be explained by science and reason. Magic, in any form, is absolutely scary. This can be due to a past experience, or even a belief that magic cannot be controlled.

30. FearlessKnow what’s worse than being afraid of everything? Not being afraid of anything. Fear is necessary, fear is good, it saves us from life-threatening danger, and without it, your character does not engage a fight-or-flight response, leaving them both high and dry of adrenaline at the start of a fight, and extremely boring to watch horror flicks with.

31. Forlorn of MenYour character is uncomfortable in the presence of humanoids.

32. GossipYour character cannot keep a secret.

33. HaemophiliaYour character’s blood does not clot normally. This makes it difficult for a wound, no matter how small, to stop bleeding.

34. HauntedYour character is haunted by a ghastly spectre of your own design. A few fun optional effects are insanity and a not-so-imaginary friend

35. HemeralopiaYour character cannot see in daylight.

36. HippopotomonstrosequipedaliophobiaYour character has an irrational fear of “big words” (usually words with seven or more syllables, or words that have lengthy spellings (Constantinople, for instance)).

37. Honesty to a FaultYour character annot tell a lie, no matter what. If they are forced to lie, they find themselves disturbed and wrought with guilt.

38. Honorable FighterYour character does not like fighting opponents who are armed with lesser weapons, or who have an obvious disadvantage.

39. Hot-BloodedSee “Cold-Blooded”.
Your character cannot tolerate heat (5d12 to decide their lowest functional temperature, subtract 20 to decide extreme, life-threatening conditions)

40. HuntedYour character has enemies who will stop at nothing to find him/her. These enemies must pose a real threat to your character; Your character must be vulnerable to these enemies should they appear. (Suggestion: speak with another player about having one of them play your enemy, or having their character BE said enemy!)
If, for some reason, your character is no longer being hunted, roll a new trait from this table and find a way to make it apply to your character.

41. IlliteracyYour character cannot read or write.

42. ImpatientYour character is not a patient one. They cannot stand to hide or sneak around, preferring a more forward approach. They cannot stand waiting, nor can they tolerate being rushed.

43. InsomniaYour character has trouble sleeping. He or she may rely on white noise or drugs to help him or her sleep.

44. JumpyYour character instinctively flinches away from anything that touches him or her.

45. Long-Term AddictionYour character is addicted to a substance of your choice, and can no longer function normally without it. Withdrawal symptoms may include irritability or sickness.

46. Low Pain ThresholdAs read, your character has almost no tolerance for pain, no matter how insignificant or superficial.

47. Magic Corrupting TouchAnything magic that your character touches becomes corrupted and evil, often with an ironic twist (for instance: a mirror that would usually allow the user to change their outward appearance with a Guise spell now permanently transforms them into a horrific beast).

48. MagneticAnything metal within your character’s vacinity is attracted to him or her. (Roll 1d12 to decide how many feet away from your character the object must be before it is hurled at him or her).

49. MercifulNo matter what, your character shows benevolence, even in the face of adversity. Your character cannot kill, nor vengefully cause serious harm.

50. Moe WeaknessYour character has a strong interest in particular types of characters.

51. Motion SicknessYour character has a hard time riding vehicles or animals without losing their lunch. (Carnival rides count!!)

52. Music LoverYour character is compelled to dance at the sound of any music, no matter how awful or off-beat. They may even sing or hum along.

53. NarcissisticYour character believes themselves better than others, especially better looking. He or she loves talking about him- or herself, and adores adoration and praise.

54. NarcolepsyYour character has trouble staying awake. Abruptly falling asleep may be triggered by something of your choice.

55. NecrophiliaYour character becomes aroused by the dead.

56. NecrosisA part of your character’s body suffers cell death. (This is a life-threatening condition aimed to rush the characters into a plot; You may re-roll if you get this option!)

57. NyctalopiaYour character cannot see anything in the dark

58. ObeseYour character loves eating, and it shows.

59. Obsessive CompulsiveYour character cannot tolerate asymmetry, must compulsively touch certain things in certain ways a certain number of times, etc.
(This flaw is for advanced writers with experienced dealing with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. If you want, you can reroll this one!)

60. OverconfidentYour character is, well, overconfident. They believe in their abilities a little too much, to a fault. They are confident to a fault, and this fact often lands them into trouble.

61. OverprotectiveYour character’s devotion to another can be more problematic than helpful.

62. Painful Abberant MarkYour character suffers a marking, be its origins magical or otherwise, which frequently causes them great pain. This may be triggered by something, or a constant throbbing. Get creative!

63. PhobiaYour character is afraid of something mundane (you choose!)

64. Pokemon SyndromeYour character cannot say anything other than their own name. Ever. (Though, they may BELIEVE they’re saying something else!)

65. PossessedYour character shares his or her body with something from another world.

66. PrideNo matter the odds, your character refuses to retreat from battle or competition due to their overwhelming pride and honor; And they make EVERYTHING into a competition.

67. RacistPick a race. Your character now hates that race, and will discriminate against or go out of their way to cause harm to anyone of that species.

68. SadistYour character gains pleasure from causing pain to others.

69. Short Attention SpanYour character cannot keep their attention on anyth-- OOH, SQUIRREL!

70. Short TemperYour character gets enraged by trivial setbacks.

71. SphenisciphobiaYour character is terrified of penguins.

72. SterileYour character cannot reproduce.

73. StiffYour character is not very flexible and may suffer bone fractures and breakage quite easily.

74. SunblindYou have difficulty functioning in direct sunlight, or any other source of bright light, due to your sensitive eyes.

75. SupremecistYour character’s race is better than everyone else’s, and everyone else should either bow to your character’s race or pay for their insolence. Your character should be given special treatment over all others, based solely on their race.

76. The GameYour character is playing The Game. The objective of this game is not to remember playing it. If your character remembers playing the game, they must shout loudly “I LOST THE GAME!”, after which everyone around them is now playing the game (as they are aware of its existence), and your character is now compelled to explain the rules of the game to all of those around him or her. Then, fifteen minutes are given for everyone to forget about the game and resume playing.

77. The Love SpotPick a part of your character’s body, or roll for a random one. Your character becomes aroused when this spot is stimulated. (may not include genitals or other sexually sensitive areas)

78. Tourette SyndromeYour character suffers from involuntary muscle spasms caused by a nervous system disorder. These are called “tics”. They may be of your own design. (Example: I have Tourette Syndrome in the real-world, and my tic is a violent head-bobbing motion that makes me look like I’m nodding with a little too much enthusiasm).

79. TraploverIf your character sees a trap, they have an urge to set it off.

80. TsundereYour character is a Tsundere, meaning they rapidly change between being nice and sweet to being harsh and tough... b-but it’s not like I’m telling you this because I like you or anything. Baka.

81. UnluckyYour character has the worst luck ever.

82. Unready/UnpreparedYour character is never ready for combat.
Your character is never ready to unpause the game.
Your character never brings his or her notebook to class.

83. UrbaniteYour character feels most at home in a large city. Life in the wild simply isn’t for your character. Your character is not a survivalist, and is never a “happy camper”.

84. Vow of Silence Your character has vowed to never speak again.

85. Weak Stomach Your character has a weak digestive system and is forced to cope with this at inconvenient times.

86. Xiphiphilia Your character has an unhealthy fascination with swords, daggers, and large bladed weapons.

Originally I wrote this with formatting and in a table, buuuut... screw trying to recreate that in bbcode x_x someone else can do it if they want.

I like these. They're interesting ways to take a character and add a challenge to them that you wouldn't normally think of. I'm going to keep this bookmarked for future reference.

As long as a flaw or disability isn't played off as a way to make a bland charrie "special," but actually significantly impacts how they play, I can see it being an excellent way for people struggling with character creation to give themselves a perspective they wouldn't normally choose to play from.

Edit: My next lizard-person is going to be a Jade-supremacist. They will be incredibly racist towards bronze and iron skinned lizards.

Yeah, it can make a bland character interesting, but I wouldn't try using it that way. A bland character is still going to be bland. This just lets you add a challenge to writing as someone other than yourself.

I think it may also be a good "mile in their shoes" exercise for people who don't understand certain mental ailments such as Tourette's Syndrome or OCD. I thought about adding things like "transgender", "homophobic", "homosexual", etc., but then I thought that may be too hot-button. Also, these are supposed to just be applied to a character, rather than used as a template themselves.

Some of these are neat, but beware of "flaws" that amount to no more than griefing your party. No GM should have to sociopath-proof their adventure just because the result of an internet dice roll told you to tell your character to go bananas.

Having said that, maybe all of my characters are afraid of penguins and have just had the good fortune to never encounter one. The truth is out there...

I laughed a little harder than I should have at this, but that's generally good advice. I actually want to see this done in freeform RP, though, as opposed to the classic d20 systems
