Is there a way to center columns without messing up the contents?

Not at present. Columns are incredibly basic, with little to no formatting available.
I'm not sure how helpful this is, but it seems relevant. :o)

I tend to center content in my columns by using the colour tag and defining the article's colour as 'transparent'. I then put xxxxx or aaaaa -- or depending what I want in terms of spacing. E.g. (Color=transparent)xxxxxxxx(/color) so this helps me position things within columns and in general with more accuracy!

Alternatively, people also use transparent PNG images of desired dimensions to adjust columns. :) Either method works, but depending on the template you're working in, one might be more useful than the other.

Depending on the width of the content you want centered, it may also be worth checking out just using (columns)(nextcol) with no content between those tags, as there is minimal default spacing when they're used, I believe? It wasn't enough for my purposes when I discovered this and have modified accordingly, but it was a neat little trick, I thought.
