I'm trying to be really careful of the whole image theft issue. I was going to make a Gatomon chracter, but I wasn't sure whether it would be ok to use a picture of Gatomon or not. I tried looking up what kind of rules they have toward fanart and such, but wouldn't find any.

So can anyone help me?

If you want to use any kind of art, we encourage you to contact the artist first to gain permission.

As for fan art, it's a little trickier since the artists probably don't have permission from the rights owners. You'd still need to gain permission from the artist and be aware that if we receive a complaint from Bandai (the rights owners for Digimon), we'd need to comply with any request they make.

I'm not familiar enough with Digimon or Bandai's attitude toward fan creations to say more than that.

It looks like they encourage fanart since roleplay and fanart kind of go hand in hand so that's good. I was thinking of using a piece of official art from the digimon wiki.

Unfortunately, no one here will be able to answer that question for you. Much as with any other fandom, it's 100% up to Digimon's copyright holders how they'd feel about it.
