How do you add a person as one of your character's friends exactly? Sorry if this is overasked or makes me sound like I'm stupid 
Its neither of those things! Never doubt yourself or be afraid to ask questions.
The answer is simple: click on the characters profile that you want to friend. At the top, you should see something that says "+Connect", unless you're on mobile in which you just open the "Toolbar". Click on that and follow the instructions.
