Yugi Muto is a 16 year old teenager that lives in Domino City in a game shop called Kame Games that his grandfather owns. He lives with his mother Mrs. Muto and his grandfather Solomon Muto while his father is away on a business trip. He is pure-hearted and child-like. He is good at games, riddles, and puzzles, especially the famous card game Duel Monsters. Yugi can be extremely shy sometimes which makes it hard for him to make friends. This also makes him a easy target for bullies to pick on him. He isn't very good at sports or athletic but is very bright and smart so he tends to enjoy things that relies on thinking instead of action. At first Yugi didn't had a lot of friends. Anzu Mazaki was his first and only friend from childhood and the only girl he has had a crush on. Because of his lack of friends, he was often alone and depressed until the day he found a golden puzzle in his grandfathers shop. Soon Yugi learned that it was called the Millennium Puzzle and heard that whoever solve it would grant the person a wish or so he believed.
After spending eight years on it and finally put it together, he was granted the dark powers of the shadow games. It allowed him to bear host to the spirit of the puzzle which would later be called Yami Yugi. A powerful spirit that took the image of a stronger version of himself who was incredibly smart and cleaver despite not having full knowledge of the modern times or even his own past. With help from the spirit, he was able to conquer challenges that were constantly thrown at him and as a reward he was able to make a few best friends. Katsuya Jonouchi and Hiroto Honda who used to bully him soon became his best of friends along with a improvement of his relationship with Anzu. But it did came with a price as he soon found out, that he contained a rare item that belong to a group of Seven others that each had their own power. Many seek this rare and powerful item of his, powerful people who would do at nothing to get it from him. Using the card game Duel Monsters as a sort of vessel and means to battle against such foes, which allowed them to make use of both of Yugi's and Yami's high intelligence and magical powers.
The two were unstoppable and also became the closet of friends. The both of them battled against the powers of darkness with Duel Monsters. But each game they played could cost them their lives as the rules were different to those who played the Shadow Games. The Dark Games contained black magic and brought real pain to those that play. Which often resulted in death or enslavement to the losers. Because of the puzzle, Yugi is sent on a journey that would change his life forever as he protects his friends, battle against evil, save the world, and find out the mysterious past of his partner Yami who was also known as... Yu-Gi-Oh!. -
His usual outfit consists of the standard male Domino Junior/Senior High uniform complete with a closed buckled collar. It contains a pair of blue pants/leather with black dressed shoes along with a blue long coat with the choice of a white or black t-shirt. He wears the Millennium Puzzle on a chain around his neck every day. Yugi normally wears this outfit most of the time but there are rare times when he be seen in other sets of clothing. Yugi is known to be rather short of his age and looks much younger then he is and this sometimes leads others to think he is a child. Though, perhaps due to some magical affect, when he transforms into Yami, he is a bit taller and looks much older and closer to his age despite sharing the same body. Yami Yugi also tends to modify his outfit at times to fit his persona better. Usually placing his school jacket over his shoulders as a cape, displaying the black t-shirt he wears underneath.

3,000 years before present day events, the Millennium Puzzle and the other six Millennium Items were forged in Kul Elna by sacrificing 99 souls of the Kul Elna villagers. The items were created in order to protect Egypt from attackers. Pharaoh Aknamkanon was given the Puzzle, while six priests were given the other six items. Together they fought off the attackers and saved Egypt.
After Aknamkanon became aware how the Items were created, he fell ill and died shortly afterward. The Puzzle was inherited by his son Atem.
The Puzzle was later stolen from teenage Atem, by Thief King Bakura, who used it and the other Millennium Items to Summon Zorc Necrophades.
Atem defeated Zorc at the cost of his own life. He used his name as part of a spell that sealed Zorc's soul and his own in the Millennium Items. Atem's soul got sealed in the Millennium Puzzle, which was shattered and was laid to rest in his tomb. Atem's memory, including his name was wiped, so that he could not recall the spell, so that the binding could never be undone.
In 1960, Solomon Muto retrieved the Millennium Pendant, now called the Millennium Puzzle in the Tomb of the Nameless Pharaoh.Over the years, no one had been able to assemble the puzzle. Solomon's grandson, Yugi, found the puzzle in the family game shop and spent eight years trying to solve it.
Yugi managed to solve the Puzzle, while under the pressure of getting money to pay Ushio's self-imposed bodyguard fee. After solving it, his body bore host to part of Atem's soul, known as Yami Yugi.
Yami Yugi was able to take control of Yugi's body while Yugi had the Puzzle. Yugi often wore the Puzzle around his neck on a chain, allowing him to easily get Yami's help, usually to play games, particularly Duel Monsters.
The Puzzle resembles an upside-down pyramid with an eye on the front. It has a ring on top, allowing it to be worn around the owner's neck.
The puzzle is extremely complex and difficult to solve, having taken Yugi at least eight years to successfully assemble it. In addition, If someone not worthy tried to rebuild it if it was shattered, he or she could end up trapped in an illusion of the puzzle's maze, indicating that only a chosen one can build it.
In addition to holding the soul of Atem, the puzzle is able to fulfill one wish of the person who had solved it and heighten its owner's chance of success in a game, judging by their skill as well as the importance of the game at hand. The hieroglyphics enscribed on the puzzle say, "The one who solves me shall gain the powers and knowledge of darkness...".
The Puzzle appears to heighten the owner's chance of winning games such as Duel Monsters, and is able to initiate Shadow Games and corresponding Penalty Games that Yami Yugi used to punish those who harmed Yugi or his friends.
A Penalty Game is a punishment given to the loser of a Shadow Game. Millennium Item holders are capable of inflicting supernatural punishments. Yami Yugi's Penalty Games often act as poetic justice to a person, who trespassed on the souls of his friends. While some of these penalties are fatal, he has used them to help the person on times. The Mind Crush Penalty Game is often used to banish the evil of one's self and hopefully change their ways. Tho it could be used to completely shatters one mind which very well could result in their deaths.
