Just as Princess Celestia saw the signs of Nightmare Moon's return, so too did she foresee what might truly be Equestria' s greatest threat. Perhaps it was for that reason that she took such a young student under her wing, and would later ascend the little purple unicorn to regal alicorn status.
For you see, prophecy told of a challenge to Celestia's rule. In preparation for what would surely be a great battle, Celestia required that all her subjects go through a tedious application process, to ensure that nopony in her kingdom could in any way impact Equestria's future without her explicit approval. Additionally, Celestia took preventive measures to ensure her reign, such as banning from her kingdom any ponies she considered petty, two-faced troublemakers, as well as any ponies associated with such crafty, deviant nuisances; friends, wives... no pony was spared. When her subjects grew wary of her omnipotent authority, they begged she allow them just a few small pardons. But Celestia, or as she was known by this point The Goddess, would hear no such nonsense. She decreed that anypony who didn't like the tedious application process could instead purchase a small place of residence from her, at the small fee of 3 golden dragon scales per month. "But dragon scales are such a rarity in this world!" the ponies cried, "and never before has our world required a fee..." "Silence, you tantruming children!" Celestia's pawn shrieked. "Do you think running a kingdom is cheap?" the town jester chimed in.
The little ponies exchanged worried looks, but it was then that their champion arose. Through magic, or witchcraft, or that stupid water pool-gimmick Pinkie Pie used that one time in season 3 but never revisited, Equestria met its champion: 20 Twilight Sparkles. For who better to do battle with The Goddess than her most faithful student, fate decreed. The ponies cheered for their champion - their 20 champions - and were led by the purple alicorn army to a place free of The Goddess's tyranny. For the 20 Twilight Sparkles were not the hero that Equestria deserved, but the one it needed.
