It was not by Misaki's choice that she took arms against the creatures that plagued the land. It was duty that steered her to it, though not duty to some feudal lord nor the Emperor himself. It was duty to her family, to her husband. She married Mizuno Shigeo after he impressed her father in a way that she is not even directly aware of. At the time he certainly seemed a suitable candidate. He was a Samurai and after having apparently earned something for himself, he sought to settle down 'until he was needed again'. He had aspirations to build a family and her father felt that Misaki should marry him.. Likely to solidify some form of long standing deal between their two families.. The details were frankly lost on her, but Shigeo was not at all as he had appeared then.
He was something a kin to a mouse or.. a rat in personality. One could say he was sniveling in a way. Such things really didn't directly surface until a few years married to him. More often than not she wished that they were not married and that she instead was somewhere far, far away from him, but duty to family kept her there. It wasn't as if Shigeo was a particularly bad person, at least not to her. She couldn't say for sure just how honorable he handled his business, but that was hardly her direct place to question. All she could directly speak on was that he never raised a hand to her, though he did have a mouth on him and he used it often. Shigeo ran his mouth a lot and talked his way out of trouble, or in to it. He wasn't her ideal husband, nor really an ideal companion for anyone, but she cared for him all the same, as was her duty as his wife.
The fifth year of their marriage felt more or less the same as the ones that came before them. She enjoyed the wealth that came in, as much as anyone in her position would and all seemed calm and peaceful. It was only until the Yokai made themselves known, and the evil that spread from the heart of Nippon, that her life shifted dramatically.
She was traveling with Shigeo, who now hired guards instead of carrying his swords anymore. It seemed fine, but when it came time to defend himself, he often was cowering until the danger was over. In this case, the danger was a few Oni and there would be no cowering as their wagon was destroyed and the guards slain. She'd been thrown in to a ditch and watched as her husband was thrown in to a giant basket and taken off.
It took time to crawl out of the ditch and to find one of the horses that survived the encounter. It was beyond her why her husband was kidnapped by Oni of all things, but she knew that she had to get him back. Misaki returned home, she dug out his Shigeo's swords and his armor and without much thought to anything else, she departed their home for what could be the last time. All to save a man who she was not very fond of, but cared for all the same.
