  Orabelle was born to a runaway slave and a courtesan of French and Spanish descent in the Dutch port city of Batavia, Indonesia. She never knew her father, but spent a lot of time with her mother as a child, learning to pick pockets and survive on the streets. When Ora was 13, her mother had decided to brave the ocean to bring her daughter to America. Unfortunately, owing to an unusual plague that struck the ship, Ora's mother became ill. By the time the ship arrived in the Louisiana port, Ora was orphaned and now scarred in certain areas from attempts of molestation and bodily harm.
  Having learned how to survive from her mother, Ora resided in the bayous outside the Crescent City, sufficing to steal food when she could. At 16, she stumbled upon an old one-room shack deep in the bayou, while gathering edible fauna. She found a delicious meal placed on the table and in the middle of smuggling the food, ran into its owner, a Voodoo Queen. Ora, quite the pessimist by now, saw no reason to fear the Queen as she had no real reason to fear death. The Queen looked at Ora and saw potential there, decided instead to take her under her wing and teach her the art of Voodoo. Ora proved to be a very dutiful apprentice, marveling in her mentor's strangely independent personality, despite her skill and knowledge in the art of fortune-telling.
  To this day, Ora helps run the Fair Fortune voodoo shop in Crescent City and cares for the premises while her mentor is away. She lives above the shop and when she seeks time away or needs to replenish her stores of herbs, stays in the shack in the bayou.
