Sally Valenti

Sally had always been what you might call different and yet she fit so many clichés it was a little painful to assess from the outside. Abandoned at birth and growing up in the system with no parents around and no real stability she lived and thrived in a constant state of chaos. Always on the move, never bothering to make connections because in her mind people only ever let you down, the world was out for itself and to survive you had to be able to beat everyone else at the game.

Even from a young age Sally had some unusual gifts that gave her a little edge over her peers in that respect, things that as an infant had her sent from home to home by freaked out foster family's and as a child and teen got her kicked out for breaking rules in a way she never had much control over at the time.

Since she was old enough to Sally had fled the system and lived her life comfortably enough never staying in one place too long, using her 5 finger discount to keep her in crappy motel rooms and clothes and junk food, a duffle bag with her collection of "found" items and her laptop and clothes all she needed in the world and a little Vodka, or a lot generally whatever was cheapest. Because in her lonely isolated world the burn of cheap alcohol and the buzz of drinking it was sometimes the only things she got to feel.

You see Sally had a couple of strange little gifts, she had always been able to get a read on people's emotions, sometimes she even got the odd inexplicable memory from them, usually something tied to strong emotions, guilt, hate, shame. That helped her out here and there but her main gift was the one that kept her ahead of the curve and in food and money. Sally couldn't explain it but she could pickpocket without ever touching someone, she just had to know where the item was and want it enough and then like magic it was in her hands. It had made her quite the collector of people's wallets, watches, whatever could fetch her a little money in truth. Now and then she used it for clothes or food but Sally preferred to take money from the rich to feed and cloth her poor poor self, like a selfish robin hood.

It had freaked people out of course growing up and now she tried to keep away from almost everyone unless she was out working. Sally retreated to a world of music on her stolen iPod and crappy films on her beaten up laptop, she would gather junk food hole up in a motel and watch films and eat until she was running low and had to lift herself a little more dough and perhaps a little something to drink to pass the time.

Her life wasn't glamorous, she didn't use her abilities for power or fame or great wealth, she just continued, a long quiet boring life her only thrill the rare moments she used her strange powers. That is what had led to this mess, even as she stumbled along the sidewalk, eyes squinting to find the right one in a neighbourhood that looked like it could have some juicy wallets hidden on its inhabitants. Money had been getting low and she had been tailing a man in a black suit waiting for him to use his wallet so she knew where he kept it. When he finally paid for a coffee she had summoned it to her hand from a safe distance. Then something impossible happened he turned and looked right at her, like he knew.

That's when shit got weird fast in a single blink the man had gone from being partway down the alleyway to right in front of her, his hand wrapped around her wrist causing a hot sharp pain. . . .and there was this look in his eyes, A deep intense stare that terrified her to her core. Sally wanted out, she wanted away from the man who had somehow known what she was doing, whose hand felt like it was burning her skin. Looking to her side there was this can on the floor, Sally thought about it hitting him in the head hoping he might let go, with everything she had she willed it to happen. And with the biggest push of her power she had ever manage, it worked, there was a loud noise Sally screwed her eyes shut to concentrate, when she finally opened them, he was pinned, the can, the trash, the ladder leading up to a roof, those big metal trash cans, doors . . .everything in that alleyway had him pinned against the wall.

He should have been dead, Sally saw him there crushed under it all against the wall . . .she looked away only for a moment, scanning the alleyway up and down to see if anyone had heard and when she looked back, he was gone. Sally fled, her feet carrying her out of the alleyway and away from the madness, pounding the pavement as she got as far away from that spot as she could, she thought she was cracking, that she had lost the plot, there was no way it could be real. It wasn't until she stopped to catch her breath that Sally pulled back the sleeve of her right wrist, sure enough there on her arm was a perfect grasping reddish black handprint.
