Rick had a typical childhood, born to two farmers that were looking to settle further west. It took a few years for them to scrounge up the money to begin the journey and by the time they finally managed to buy a wagon and enough supplies, their infant son was now a rambunctious seven year old. Maybe it was the fact they got unlucky on the road, or perhaps it was because their son had bragged a bit too much about a wagon full of supplies to whatever passerby he met. Whatever the cause may be, two of the three travelers perished on the second night at the hands of some thugs.

His hiding spot under the wagon didn't last and soon he was at the wrong end of a shotgun, only seconds away from joining his parents up in heaven. Until shots rang out, and his parents' killers all had revolver shells in their necks. His savior was an older man by the name of Benjamin McClaine, who he learned not long after was the infamous leader of 'The Jackals', a criminal gang that had been spoken of in newspapers for the last fifteen years. With nowhere else to go, no one else to live with, Rick was taken back to the gang's current hideout and Benny raised him like a son, teaching him the way of the gun and the way to outrun the law.

Now, as an adult, Rick is something like a right-hand man to Old Benny, who had now resigned to running the gang from the safety of camp, becoming the mastermind behind robberies and assaults. They had been residing comfortably in the town of Maybeck, until Rick had followed orders a bit too well and shot an older man in broad daylight. It started a mass shootout, which ended in the death of a few town's folk and the relocation of the gang.

A few years had passed since the shootout, and Rick finds himself assigned with assessing the situation of the town, and the region nearby, to see if it would be wise to move back.
