Background

Born to Yuan Zhong, a weaponsmith, and Liu Shi, an herbalist, Yuan Fei grew up around both steel and medicine. When her family was killed in a raid by a local lord’s men, she was taken in by a secretive organization of assassins operating between Hanzhou and the southern trade routes, a group hired by merchants and minor nobles to carry out revenge, theft, or silent justice.

By her late twenties, disillusionment began to set in. After being ordered to assassinate a scholar who had spoken out against her client, a man she realized was innocent. she refused the contract and fled. Her former associates marked her for death. She vanished south, shedding the name “Willow Shadow,” and burned every trace of her past life.

To travelers, she is simply Madam Fei, a disciplined and discreet innkeeper. Few suspect her past. Yet those who watch closely might notice the way she still moves silent steps, quick reflexes, and the habit of sitting with her back to the wall.
