Somnus does age, just not in a way relating to human laws of growth. He ages much slower than humans, and even claims to have been present in Germany during World War II. During the day, Somnus has little more power than an average human. But like his folklore brethren he is undeniably demonic, and when the sun goes down, the demon comes to the fore. Eye color will gradually shift from dark brown to red as the night goes on and he may be more expressive than usual. He is able to manifest his body as mist for very short periods of time, as this is generally used to enter and exit the rooms of sleepers via keyholes or cracks under the door.

Alps attack by creating horrific nightmares, then sitting astride the dreamer's chest, growing heavier until the crushing weight wakes the victim, leaving them breathless and terrified. The victims are unable to move, and will experience what is generally referred to as sleep paralysis. This protects the alp from being known, as most victims will assume it is a hallucination. They will not kill humans, they will merely feed off the terror until the victim falls unconscious, but they are known to crush small animals to death during a pressure attack. Unlike most male alps, Somnus does not have a preference to whose dreams he twists into nightmares. Sex is irrelevant. Despite his body being underweight, during an attack he is able to exert unnatural pressure upon the sleeper. He is not prone to sexual attacks on a sleeper.

He is capable of some shape shifting during the night, favoring cats, dogs and snakes. Like all alps, Somnus possesses his Tarnkappe, a simple hat that provides the alp with magic and the ability to become invisible when worn. Stealing the Tarnkappe of an alp will leave the creature in one's debt, and it will offer great rewards for it's return.

There are many ways to ward off the alp, most thought to be superstition but the foolproof action is to keep a light turned on during the night.
Somnus will not always attack maliciously, sometimes he prefers mischief to terror. He may rearrange a person's home, sour their perishable foods or inflict them with a minor illness.

As a rule, he will remember very little of his nightly events. His memory growing foggier as the night wears on until all that is left is a blank space. He often seeks to suppress the alp by way of drugs, the loss of control and memory seems to bother him greatly.
Somnus is a fresh character so he is very much a WIP.
