the beginning

as part of one of the many families that were relocated and displaced as a result of the omnic crisis, young jamison's hatred for omnics began at a young age. his parents showed hatred and distaste for the robots and the country that forced their lives to change forever, thoughts that easily transferred into the susceptible mind of the young child.
by the time of him nearing the age of eleven or twelve, jamison had grown a fond interest in mechanics, demolition, engineering, and trap-making; he grew fond of scavenging, and did what he could to assist in the survival of him and his parents. for all the objections his caretakers had, he often slipped away to see what he could learn or find out about the 'scrap heaps' and how to keep them away. he tinkered with mechanical components often and developed his first successful bear trap and miniature bomb when he was a mere child.
however, despite all this, his parents never seemed to understand, never seemed to get it. when jamie's problems became more prominent and apparent, it was a point where they'd had enough; and the outback soon became his home. with nothing else on his back but his clothes, he took to scavenging, theft, and minor arson--anything he needed to do to survive. a crafty individual, he ducked underneath the radar of local authorities and narrowly avoided being caught by those he stole from. years of petty crimes and theft led him to the belief he was unstoppable, a mindset that was sorely destroyed within seconds one fateful night.
at the time, he was a young lad, roughly fourteen, and he was caught in one of the traps of mako rutledge's farm, making way with the storage of supplements and necessities stashed away. it was one windy, cold night, when jamie came crashing to his doom into the dirt from an ill-timed dash, and where the teeth of metal bit soon became the cold, unforgiving steel of chain against his skin.
this, mako thought, was certainly the only way of ensuring the security of his food, his crops, and his safety.
for his age, he was a genius, crafty and smart, with improvision skills befitting of a criminal in the works. he was snarky, shared sarcasm, often mocked his captor's ability to contain and control him, bit at him with the attitude as potent as the poison of the serpents of the outback. he was as sharp as a tack and quick-witted, and when knowledge began to spill from the boy's lips about certain subjects, he was a real... treat, with skills exceeding in engineering, mechanics, and demolition.
why he was alone, nobody could understand but he and those that had left him. it was a startling day when the true colors of this boy--called jamison and fondly referred to as 'jamie'--became clear. it had started out as a simple joke, a curious intrigue, but time began to expose more than just cute freckles on bright, beaming cheeks.
the boy, for all else, was disturbed; problems were difficult to pinpoint the source of, but they were there, more obvious as time continued on. with no friends, no acquaintances, and no family, the roughness of the outback takes the toll on those previously innocent. with a slurry of mental problems that became more prominent and domineering, it was no surprise to someone he was alone.
abandonment became the worst of it. when trust was finally built and the bridge crossed by both parties, leaving jamie alone became troublesome, if not impossible. often did he fear his captor-turned-caretaker would not return, that he would be lost to the wasteland of the outback, leave him alone as his parents once had. to this, mako responded with distress, but the australian liberation front demanded mako's attention over a teenager. as heavy a burden as it was, jamie was merely going to have to deal. jamie took to modeling and building prototype explosions in the time that mako was away--a natural skill, mako had said, that jamie should fine-tune--something that quelled his worries and provided accurate, needed distractions--even if accidents happened.
it was an incident that he would never forget. jamie swore he had the connections right, every single one, but fate had a way of proving him wrong in the flash of a second. in the outback, a lot can happen in the course of a second. in the course of a second, a misplaced wire could cause an explosive to detonate prematurely. in the course of a second, half of a house can be destroyed. in the course of a second, one can go from having four limbs to having two. in the course of a second, a man can die or live--and had mako rutledge been a second slower, life would have faded from his eyes, and he never would have seen the light of day again. **
** disclaimer, it is possible he may only lose his right leg to this explosion, and the right arm may be lost during a different incident. however, for continuity purposes, he will still claim he lost both in the same explosion, even if it isn't true--consider it sort of a mental defense mechanism that blends with his screwed up mental state
through the traumatic experience of the loss of his limbs came the rapid development of mechanics. the first prototype of his limbs were developed by mako and jamie together, built shortly after his recovery. a basic design and functionality at the best--the arm started out simple and easy, with a peg-leg that lacked a functioning knee--they never served as adequate replacements. though functional, jamie's mind never let up on improvements; a catastrophic event to him, he wanted nothing more than to obtain his limbs back as close to the originals as possible, and through mako's help and retrieval of information, jamison himself blueprinted the concept of articulate limbs and direct nerve connections.
this was the focus of his arm first; with mako using the knowledge of mechanics and machines best he could, the two continously worked together to improve them. the first successful implement of jamie's idea was hell for everyone involved; establishing connections between organics and machine in such a way that the two were flawlessly functioning provided waves of pain and agony that went on for hours. the result, at least, was the first working prototype of his arm--an articulated pieced of hardware that moved, twisted, and functioned no different than the organic one did, within the limitations of metal and synthetic tendons.
his leg, unfortunately, was never given the same treatment.
following the explosion of the fusion core, junkrat, like many others in the outback, became dislocated. just barely missing the radius of the explosion and just as barely missing several long range pieces of scrap metal, jamison fled the safe confines of his place in the outback, and took to self-preservation and scavenging.
like many others, despite avoiding the blast radius, he became exposed to the radiation of the omnium core, a toxic chemical known for the degradation and mutation of various parts of the human physique and mentality; in jamison's case, of all the effects that his body was exposed to, the most damaging was that of his mental state.
though changes were slow and subtle at first--perhaps he'd miss a shower, miss a date in his journal, talk a bit more--as time began to pass, radiation poisoning started to become much more apparent. from as simple a change as a slight alteration and questioning in moral state and care devolved a maddened criminal who soon became more obsessed with the explosives of the outback than that of his own health.
some time after the wasteland became desolate and abandoned, jamison was left among the survivors, forming a cut-throat society known as the junkers and eventually sought refuge in what would be the start of junkertown. due to his slowly devolving, unhinging state, he was assigned to scavenging and handling the dangerous explosives scavenged from the core of the omnium. not understanding the concept of the danger he was in when it came to handling explosive materials due to the omnium radiation twisting his sense of self-preservation, this was a task he took with an ill-placed pride, playing on his already twisting love and natural ability for it.
as time went on, this love quickly became a sick obsession. when mishandling led to an accidental explosion that nearly offed him, his love began mutating into a twisted, sick desire for more, and he began, instead, focusing all of his attention towards the construction and theft of bombs.
the breaking point, one might think, is when he began to devote all his attention to his self-obsession of explosives, the fascination of treasure, and the cold realization of death. from this talented teen evolved the dangerously unstable and mentally deranged individual whose only concern was how he could construct his concussion mines better, faster, and stronger.
at that point, jamison's demeanor began to change less and less into something logical and more and more into a deranged psychopath. an unpredictable man constantly teetering on the edge of insanity, his annoying personality and inpredictable, violent nature often made him the target and hate of all sorts of people--from junkers, to law makers, to the queen of junkertown herself. a precarious individual, he soon gained a hefty dislike and a known title for being a rampant, unbridled individual with a lust for destruction, chaos, a hatred for being tricked like no other... and an unprecedented stupidity.
at some point in time, his adventures in the core landed him the discovery of an invaluable treasure in the depths of what remained of the omnium fusion core; a treasure which he proudly seemed to ramble on about, but insisted he knew nothing of. his inability to keep to himself landed him in the hot waters of the queen of junkertown, who sent enforcers to coerce locations and answers out of him and then silence him forever.
it was at this point, one fateful night in a bar, that he and mako rutledge would, once again, cross paths. cornered like a rat in a cage by the queen's personal hounds, desperation led him to calling out to the only other individual in the bar for safety, offering them increasing amounts of the share of gold.
ten became twenty, twenty became twenty five, and seconds away from being shanked, cut, gorged and tortured, savior came in the form of a fist that sucker punched his attackers clean through the walls of the bar.
they, at this point, began to reconcile once more; though due to the nature of continued radiation exposure to jamison, now commonly referred to as junkrat, his memories of the past became foggy and faded. this man, he felt, was important, and while his memories were still in tact, they became blinded and buried underneath a thick layer of dark soot, foggy and distant at best.
after a brief brawl, and an attempt to haggle back down, roadhog and junkrat eventually settled upon working together as partners in crime. a purely strict work relationship, roadhog would be provided half of the share of every heist or treasure hunt they did in exchange for junkrat's safety. likewise, junkrat would provide the details and locations of various treasures.
a rat with eyes only for destruction and money; a hog with no soul or remorse for those that he killed; a pair of criminals with incentive of theft and arson.
it was hell's match made in heaven.

going legit, the plan, and...?
spearheaded by junkrat and the thought of revenge, roadhog and junkrat took almost immediately to the road, robbing, thieving, and destroying their way across australia in search of that next big heist. with a guarded safe-haven at mako's farm and a cut-throat society at their doorstep that had no problems with resorting to brute force, they took to a more drastic version of scavanging.
following his (and soon roadhog's) personal creed of 'no job too big, no score too small', junkrat masterminded pretty much every attack there was--from the outbacks of australia to the streets of tokyo to the arcades of korea. at some point, a business man managed to reach out to them, attempting to trick them into getting arrested through the destruction of the suit's property. though this was partially successful, junkrat and roadhog quickly figured out they had been set up, and responded just as destructively in tow.
there doesn't appear to be any signs of them going 'legit' any time soon.
