• His Story

  Kasey has lived most of his life in foster care. He was abandoned by his father when he was eight, his mother having died when he was a little under a year old due to continuing complications from his birth.
  
  Kasey has an older brother, Liam. They were sent to different homes when Kasey was 9, and though they ended up together again for a few months when Kasey was 12, and kept contact as best they were able -- which was hard, since letters often ended up at old addresses and some foster parents restricted their access to phones and internet -- they ended up growing apart. Mostly because Liam ended up getting into hard drugs and crime, while Kasey was fortunate enough, when he was 16, to find a proper family.
  
  When he arrived with the Reinholtz, he was a mess of a kid. He was angry all the time, ran away six times in the first five months, and generally gave his foster parents hell. It was really no surprise to anyone; Kasey has 13 surnames tattooed on the inside of his left forearm, from inner elbow to halfway down; from 8 to 16, he had been in 13 foster houses. Many of the names have lines drawn through them; it took John Reinholtz years to realize that these were the families that were cruel or even abusive. Eventually, in order to try and help him past his anger, the Reinholtz entered him into a summer program on a local farm for trouble kids -- being in Texas, farms were pretty common -- where he learned to ride. Though it makes him feel like a bit of a cliche` -- he's adorably naive to the fact that he is, in fact, a lot of cliche`s all rolled into one -- he has to admit that learning to ride and working with horses really helped him deal with things.
  
  Now, at 22, Kasey still works at that farm in the summers, but as a counselor instead. He owns his own horse, Respite, an orlov trotter mix which, at best guess, is part caspian horse. She's a shorter horse at 14 hands high, and has a dark grey coat that looks a little red in the light with white dappling and a darker mane and tail. She was supposed to be a breeding horse but could never get pregnant, so Kasey managed to buy her before her owners put her down. His day job is as a short order cook at a local restaurant, and Kasey the local rodeo circuit sometimes, mostly in bareback bronc riding, and puts what winnings he gets aside to hopefully pay for college soon; his goal is to have $20,000 set aside for it before he starts, though he's still not entirely sure just what he wants to study.
