So a little bit of a back story. You couldn’t really say it was hard to find out D’Maris’ past, seeing as how it wasn’t a trade secret and he really couldn’t make any money off of it.
Retired ‘soldiers’ from either side of the Balance weren’t entirely uncommon on the earthly plane. They were all old, all relatively powerful—more so than the average human that was for certain and most of them kept a low profile. But they stood out, of course: A couple extra feet of wings or horns, ashen skin or glowing blue eyes kind of gave a person away.
Some of them married, some of them had children, some of them took advantage of their powers in ways just skirting the All-Seeing Balance’s rules. Like D’Maris, for example: trading in exotic ‘goods’ and various... way laid items wasn’t strictly illegal and those he sold them to were thoroughly made aware of the risks, and he made quite a pretty penny off of these contracts. Trouble is, with so many Ethereals battling it out for their little slice in this mortal toil, that allotted to quite a bit of competition. Occasionally, you had to bring out the big guns; every Ethereal has the ability to change their form, Hulk up as the expression goes.
Sometimes you had to knock a few heads together, rip out a few spinal cords to make sure that competition stayed just one hairs breadth beneath you and so long as it wasn't a human you were maiming, the Enforcers never seemed to mind all that much if a few feathers were plucked or a few horns were cracked. What you need to understand about D’Maris is what you have to understand about any businessman: He wants to make money. As for the Etheral underneath that, well, that was more of a mystery than any dirt you could dig up on his past.
The present was much more valuable to him than ancient history about battles fought and won or lost, of blood spilled and scars earned. If he could make some dough telling you his life story, you can bet that he’d sit you down and take you through it from the day he was born from the stinking womb of a Breeder.
