• My name is Alexei Romanov. I was born in Moscow in the year 1570. I wish to record my story so that my life is not forgotten. My earlier years are rather insignificant. So much so that, after all of this time, I hardly even remember them. I have forgotten the faces of both my mother and my father. However, I do clearly remember the time when I had become “infected”.
  
  My family and I had lived next to a Transylvanian family. That family had two children, one son and a daughter. They were a peculiar bunch in the sense that they had only come out during the night time. However, the daughter’s bedroom window was adjacent to mine. I would often stay in my room during the day to speak to that girl. I never questioned her as to why her family was so reclusive in the day, as I thought it rude.
  
  I was hardly nineteen, but I was not as interested in finding the female species as the others in my age group, but that girl felt different. I felt a very strange attraction to her, as if she had charmed me. One day she had gotten the notion that she would visit my room in the night. I wanted to oppose her wishes, but my body denied me that will. That same night, she had left her home and climbed through my bedroom window. It was no mystery what was going to happen.
  
  She initiated the kissing. However, before long, her lips had made her way to my neck and her teeth had pierced my skin. I had no energy to resist, I did not even have enough energy to remain conscious. When I had come to, the girl had disappeared from my room. I was sweating profusely and my body felt as if it was burning from the inside. I had to force myself from my bed and make my way to the main room to try and find my family.
  
  What I saw when I had entered the room had cause my to break down into tears on the floor. My parents were slaughtered, the room was coated in blood and human organs, and what I saw next still haunts me every time I close my eyes. I saw my younger sister having her throat being ripped out and consumed. Her eyes had caught my face as she slowly slipped away from life. The last image of her in my mind was her mouthing the word “help” as her body went lifeless.
  
  My family’s murderers were none other than the Transylvanians whose daughter I had been seduced by the night prior. My instinct after I had found my composure was to immediately avenge my family. As the family had not noticed me, I knew I had the element of surprise with me. I noticed a knife on the ground and immediately went for it and attempted to stab the family’s son in the neck from behind. I had gotten no more than a few centimetres from him before, in one quick blur, my face was slashed. The father had come between the two of us and gifted me with the scars on my face which serve as a constant reminder of the events which transpired that day.
  
  Though I had staggered back on account of my new injury, I was still intent on exterminating the monsters which had destroyed my family. I had raised my hand to deliver a slash to the family’s father, though when I tried to deliver the blow, my body ceased to move. Moments later, I felt a woman’s touch tracing up my neck and onto my face. I remembered that touch well, it was the girl. She planted a kiss on my cheek and then I simply lost consciousness once more.
  
  When I had awoken again, I found myself in a strange place. I was in a grand bed, my clothes gone. I had looked across on the other side of the bed and there was that same girl also missing clothing and asleep. I had risen out of the bed to put my clothes back on and try to recall events that had transpired, but as I had barely gotten my shirt on, she spoke to me. “I have a liking for you,” she said as she fixed her gaze on me, “and so, we are to be married. Now. So prepare yourself.”
  
  I was rather confused. Only a day prior, I was a normal Russian boy courting a girl through a window, and then I was to be married to that girl. I then recalled that it was that girl’s family who had massacred mine, though, for whatever reason, I felt the desire for vengeance no longer. I was simply fine with doing whatever it was I was told to do. That day, I was to be wed to that girl, though I knew not entirely what she was.
  
  At the time of my wedding, I watched my fellow humans be slaughtered by cattle and their bodies be served as a feast on great tables, and their blood poured into chalices for hundreds of twisted, depraved cannibals to consume. However, for whatever reason, I was fine with this. Once I was married, I was required to acknowledge the girl as my equal and she was to acknowledge me as hers. Apparently, this absolved whatever blood pact had come with her biting me.
  
  On that same day, I had acquired my first taste of human blood. There was a man and his family being branded and abused like cattle. I was to slaughter them. I had no qualms about it...and I do not think if I had to do it again today, I would have any objections at all. I started with the woman of the family. I plunged my hand into her stomach with little effort at all, though I knew not how I could do that. I felt around inside of her until I found her stomach. I had pulled it out and ate it as if it were a normal piece of meat.
  
  The girl’s father was apparently the head of a vampiric clan. In my marrying her, I had made an agreement to become the clan’s successor should anything happen to the man. The girl’s brother did not mind this arrangement and acknowledged me as his potential leader. I was still not entirely certain all of what was going on was truly happening, but I had no opposition.
  
  I had spent years with this girl without leaving the Transylvanian castle where we resided. In those years, I had given that girl two children, but my body still seemed to remain the same as when I had been taken to that place. Throughout my entire time there, I felt nothing. I simply existed. I held conversations when spoken to, but I never felt as if I did more than exist. I felt no emotions. No hatred to those who killed my family, no sadness at my family’s death, no remorse for the family I had slaughtered, no love for my wife and not even fatherly love for my children. The only time I felt anything was when I closed my eyes to sleep, and my sister’s face haunted me.
  
  Eventually, my children grew older. The girl’s appearance favoured my own, and the boy had the features of his mother. Both of my children loved me, and I believe they still do, but I have never said one word to them. It was not required of me. For centuries I remained there, simply existing. I was regarded as “Lord Alexei Romanov, second in line to the throne of the Cazacu clan”, and no one dared call me otherwise or shorten my name.
  
  One day, I became tired of it. I wanted to feel again. Then I smiled. The realisation that I wanted to feel something was a feeling itself. Then I had grown happy. I felt happiness. Then all my emotions had returned. All I wanted to do at that point was feel….more. I did not want to stay locked up in that castle any longer. I was there for a while and all of the members trusted me, so people merely thought it was peculiar when I decided to leave however they dared not express the sentiment to me.
  
  I was allowed to walk out. So I did. I walked. Then I ran. I kept running. I ran from nightfall until the break of day. Then I found it out...I was no longer allowed into the daylight. The smallest bit of sunlight that touched my skin burned me. The burning made me run even faster. I had just found my emotions again, I was not about to die before I could enjoy them.
  
  I ran faster than I could even comprehend. I realised then that I never made the effort to experience my vampiric perks. Eventually, I had found a small village. I ran into the first building I saw in that village. It belonged to a couple who, by the looks of the woman, was expecting a child. I had looked at them, and they were stunned to see me. I looked down at my body only to see most of my skin cracked and burnt.
  
  I was injured by the sunlight. This caused a hunger in me which I had not previously learned to control. This hunger caused me to slaughter the couple without second thought and consume them. However, after my hunger was sated, my body was repaired. I made the decision that I would wait out the daytime before I set back off.
  
  That was the start of my life. After that point, I had lived out my centuries travelling across the world, learning new powers and living a life of vice. That was all I wanted...and all I still want. I, to this day, consume drugs, bide my time with many women and simply enjoy my life in all ways that I can. However, I still see her face...my sister. Every time I sleep…nothing will ever erase that memory from my mind...perhaps more drugs might help.
