  • Despite her outward appearance, for the most part Devin comes across quite upbeat. It's rare for her to not be sporting a smile or cheery disposition in public.
    Death and its aspects don't seem to bother her at all, in fact she actually finds herself comfortable around the dead and dying. While she doesn't have a preference for either living or dead, there are still certainly things she likes and dislikes about both.

  • NECROMANCY

    xxxxxThe necromancy that Devin channels is a bit different than most. For her, it comes from her bloodline. She doesn't need a grimoir to summon it - it's something that simply comes naturally for her. The major difference between her magic and most, is that for her necromancy comes as something akin to a trade-off. For all the life she gives to the dead, she consequently takes that amount of death. Because of the give-and-take nature of her magic, the more that Devin practices on the dead the more she actually dies, herself.
    xxxxxThe more that Devin dies, the more her flesh begins to mimic the dead she raises.
    Stage 1: Decomposition begins slow, things high in keratin begin to denature first - fingernails and chunks of hair start to fall out, and will continue to do so unless she takes a break and lets her body heal. Recovering from this stage takes a day or two.
    Stage 2: If she continues to use magic without a break, various types of collagen will denature. This culminates in the deterioration of her skin, ligaments, tendons, and other connective tissue. Her teeth will fall out, as well as chunks of flesh as they begin to rot. She is still able to function, but existence is incredibly uncomfortable. Recovering from this stage takes about a week.
    Stage 3: Her heart will eventually stop, causing all of her blood to flow to her feet due to gravity, turning them a purplish blue while leaving what remains of her skin a ghastly white. At this stage there is very little neural function. She is essentially a walking, grunting, stereotypical zombie. She has trouble functioning, let alone continuing to use magical practices. During this period she needs extensive help caring for herself, and it may take weeks for her flesh to grow back and the life to flow within her once more. It is because of this cycle that she does not age, and hasn't visibly done so since she first came into her powers in her late 20s.
    SPELLS

    RAISE DEAD

    xxxxxThis one should be fairly self-explanatory. She is able to raise plants and non-sapient creatures, but the bigger it is the more Life it takes from her.
    xxxxxThis ability warps Devin the most when used on humans. If she uses it on something bigger than your average dog, her body will rot to a point close to death. It is for this reason she has only used this ability on another human once. If she raises a human, the strain alone will bring her to the border between Stage 2 and Stage 3 decomposition, if she manages any other spells, it will likely push her over the line and into Stage 3. With time and practice she may find it easier to do, and less detrimental to her body, but for now she tries to stay away from raising humans.

    REPAIR UNDEAD

    xxxxxDid your zombuddy get a little wear and tear? Lose an arm in an underground arm-wrestling tournament? Devin can slap 'em back together again, no problem! Maybe you're a vampire tryin' not to fall off the wagon but somebody just stabbed you in the kidney and boy it would be grand if you could heal yourself without having to chow down on your GrubHub driver. Your local Necromancer has you covered.
    xxxxxDoing this comes at a slight cost to Devin's form. She will still be functional, but it will be come visibly apparent that her body is rotting, especially when she attempts to heal serious wounds. Using this ability can vary between putting her at Stage 1 decomposition or even Stage 2.

    DEATH MARIONETTE

    xxxxxDevin has a particular affinity for controlling the undead. Her magics allow her to take complete control of an undead's skeleton (or in the case of skeletons, well, their... everything...) and move them in ways she sees fit for a short period of time. All you zombies, ghouls, ghosts, and vampires wanna do the Monster Mash? No? Too fuckin' bad. You're doin' the Monster Mash now.
    xxxxxUsing this ability can have a variety consequences for Devin's body. The more the undead struggles and attempts to resist this ability, the bigger the toll it will take on Devin's energy and Life, and the more she will rot for it. Using this ability can vary between putting her at Stage 1 decomposition or even Stage 2. If the particular undead she is attempting to control is far out of her league, it is possible for this spell to fail. In the case of a spell failure she will be drained of energy but remain at the same amount of Life she had prior to casting the spell.

    CURSES AND HEXES

    xxxxxDid your boyfriend cheat on you? Wanna make it so his winkie turns black and falls off? You've come to the right witch.
    xxxxxDevin can only have so many hexes and curses active at a time. Because of this, she tends to only place short-term curses. She doesn't quite have the magical energy to curse your entire bloodline...yet, but you'd best hope not to cross her when she does. Hexes and curses make Devin a bit sluggish. The more of them she has up at a time, the slower she tends to get.

    EVOCATION

    Swarm of Teeth: Devin summons a swarm consisting of hundreds of animate, flying human teeth in a 5-foot-by-5-foot cube. These teeth attack all creatures within the swarm’s area. She can summon the swarm so that it shares an area with other creatures, and she can move the swarm up to 20 feet in any direction. If she chooses not to move the swarm, it automatically moves up to 20 feet to envelop the nearest creature (including herself) if it has not already done so. The swarm persists for 5 minutes on average, depending on her focus, and drains her halfway to Stage 1 of decomposition.
