Born to a shape shifting Troll mother and an eastern european immigrant human father, Ruby grew up in the Troll Market after her father skipped town- having had no idea or desire to remain with the creature his wife and new child turned out to be. Fleeing to his home country, Ruby would never know her father, though his heritage would plague her for all her life. The other children of the Troll Market were cruel to Ruby, always quick to
remind her of the differences that kept her from fitting in. She did not smell the same as they, or desire the same meals, and her skin while every bit as hard theirs, did not appear to be made of stone. Ruby learned a hard lesson at a very young age to avoid the other children at any cost, as Trolls are aggressive, and it wasn't long before she had become their favorite target.
Adolescence was no easier, at a time when Trolls paired off to breed and build their lives, Ruby was a pariah. Alone, angry and hormonal, Ruby took to the streets of New York to reek havoc in a haphazard attempt to 'blow off steam'. It was there the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense found the half breed girl, fighting for cash in an underground ring as 'The Blue Demon'. Offering a place of belonging, Ruby accepted a position with the B.P.R.D. and became one of their enhanced agents.
Around the same time, an amulet was found in the deep caverns beneath the Troll Market. The Solaris Amulet had come back to the land of the Trolls. Once owned by the faerie kind, far across the sea, the amulet gave it's wearer much of the power of the Sun itself- but could only be wielded by one worthy and sworn to the good of all Creature kind. A search went out to find the magical creature that would be its bearer, but the Solaris Amulet spoke to none. The Troll Tribunal despaired, and the amulet was set on a shelf, waiting for the day it's bearer would enter the Market to claim it.
