Background
Her background is...interesting. A woman from this time period should think fairly lowly of herself, know her place and not question it sort of thing. But Caroline did know her place; it was as Captain of The Last Tide. She owes her high self-confidence to her father, the man that called her princess and treated her like one throughout her entire childhood.
Her childhood was nice. It was onboard The Last Tide and it was a joyful one. She didn't have a mother, she had passed away while giving birth to her. She did as she pleased and yet was taught all the basic lessons to life, as well as how to handle herself in combat. Her father wanted her to be able to captain the ship one day, as she should.
Her brother left when he was 18 and she was 11. He didn't want to be a pirate and her father didn't want to convince him to be one. He left and went to go become a doctor. She didn't even need him anyway; if he wanted to be a doctor and abandon them, then good riddance.
Her father took in a little boy just before everything went to hell. He had been announced the boy's godfather, and with both parents dead, he didn't want the baby to have to grow up in an orphanage, as he knew how awful it was. His name was Johnathan.
When she was 17 was when it all went wrong. Her father under estimated a brig and they were far outnumbered. Some crew members managed to get away but not all were as lucky. Those who did took Johnathan, and tried to get her too, but it was too late. Her father was murdered, they did it right in front of her. Since she was a woman and only a child, they gave her the common decency to wait until they docked to hang her.
The previously mentioned crew members that did escape, freed her. They stole back their ship and left. From that day on she remained captain of The Last Tide.
She made the decision to raise Johnathan. They had only had him for a few days, but she didn't feel right giving him to an orphanage. She mothered him from that day on as well.
She was young. She made mistakes. She was in mourning of her father. She did several stupid things. She found someone that she thought she had loved, only their relationship turned for the worst.
Warren, said lover, was manipulative and cruel. He liked seeing her pain and made excuses when he wanted to see it. He cut her skin mostly, she wouldn't put up with being hit around. He said that the reason he wanted to cut her was because it brought him pleasure. She only allowed it to please him and in turn he was slowly covering the hidden parts of her body with scars.
She stayed because she truly did believe she loved him, and with Johnathan being nearly three at this point, Warren acted as a father figure to him. He played with him and Johnathan seemed to like him a lot. He never laid a hand on him.
He got mad often. He would yell, scream, throw things. She would yell, scream, and throw things back. Caroline Denton could be a force to be reckoned with when she was mad. One unpleasant night things managed to go down hill once again. They were arguing over...something. She couldn't remember what for the life of her now. He was cutting an apple when it started and one thing lead to another and then...it was in her. The knife was protruding out of her abdomen and he had put it there. This man that she had loved, stabbed her.
He ran and she fell. They were docked so he was able to make a quick getaway into town. Her first mate found her and was able to bring her to the ships doctor before anything too bad happened.
No one speaks of that day. No one. She is empty now. Driven by the need to keep her crews pockets heavy and their family's bellies full. She doesn't sleep at night though she insists that it's fine. She doesn't trust people like that anymore. She barely finds herself capable of trusting her own crew at times. She hasn't told Johnathan about what happened. He's only 13, and he didn't need to view her like that.
Now, Caroline Denton is only a force to be reckoned with.
