Machine Spirit:
Machine Spirit is a supernatural, animistic spirit believed by the adherents of the Cult Mechanicus within the Adeptus Mechanicus (and, from that source, by most other humans of the Imperium of Man) to inhabit and control any technology in existence as part of the divine extension of the Machine God known as "the Motive Force."

The functioning, or lack thereof, of any machine is believed to be the result of its spirit's disposition. To keep their Machine Spirits happy and cooperative, operators therefore make numerous ritualised advances to the machinery.

These rituals depend on the machine or technology at issue, but in most cases include various maintenance rituals and prayers of function. They may also occasionally include a sacrificial offering or libation. The number of rituals or the size of the offering is increased in value if the machine is large and/or important to some specific purpose.

Machine Spirits are believed to be bestowed by the Machine God and subservient to Him. They are believed to exist in every vital weapon and device used by those who follow the Emperor of Mankind. From Bolters to Power Armour to voidships, the blessing of the Machine God and His subservient Machine Spirits allows for the Emperor's enemies to be defeated.

The term is also applied to the rare instances of machine intelligence allowed to exist within the Imperium, such as the limited artificial intelligences that guide the Space Marines' powerful Land Raider main battle tank, Imperial Knights and Titans, and planetary Cogitator networks.

Alien Technology
Because alien technologies do not make observances to their Machine Spirits, many among the Adeptus Mechanicus see these devices as grave heresies that must be destroyed rather than studied, even if superior to their human-manufactured counterparts in operation. This view is not universal, however.

Indeed, many human colonies near the boundaries of the T'au Empire were found to be using more advanced T'au technology for agricultural purposes during the Damocles Gulf Crusade, and the offending colonists were punished with penal sentences.

However, the general Imperial prohibition on the use or acquisition of alien technology serves the purpose of hindering and punishing those who trade with prohibited xenos species and betray the Imperium.

Artificial Intelligence
Artificial general intelligence -- actual sentient machines (also referred to as "Abominable Intelligence" or "Silica Animus" in the Imperium) -- is prohibited under pain of execution by edict within the Imperium of Man unless a human mind is combined with it or serves as part of its mechanism (hence the existence of Servitors).

This point was made part of the agreement between the Imperium and the ancient Mechanicum from the signing of the Treaty of Mars in the late 30th Millennium, to ensure that intelligent machines would never again become corrupted by Chaos and rebel against their human masters. This had happened during the Dark Age of Technology with the constructs known as the Men of Iron, who launched a star-spanning rebellion against their human creators.

However, some machines are allowed a limited form of independent artificial intelligence under the religious guise of having an especially active Machine Spirit. An example of this is the vehicles of the Space Marines. The Space Marines' Land Raider main battle tank can continue to move and fire, albeit with lesser ability, even if its crew is unable to fight or no longer present.

Another example is an Astartes Drop Pod, which uses its limited artificial intelligence to handle course corrections and to avoid collisions into dangerous terrain or anti-aircraft fire. Upon landing, it reroutes all logic processing into target acquisition and shooting for any on-board weapons.

Imperial Titans have particularly complex Machine Spirits and can exhibit complete personalities of their own, though they still require a cybernetic interface with a human Princeps to function at their full potential.

The Tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus believe that these Machine Spirits can be influenced by religious rituals and are near-bestial in nature, capable of exhibiting emotions such as hatred and stubbornness. In particular, the Machine Spirits of Titans and Knights are revered for their particular intensity and require elaborate awakening and taming rituals.

With the use of brain-machine interface devices such as the Throne Mechanicum, pilots of these war engines can link their minds with such a limited artificially intelligent Machine Spirit directly.

Magos Lazaras Someon is a Magos Dominus which is the army portion of a Magos.

Magos Dominus (fem: Magos Domina), known also as a Tech-priest Dominus, is a senior Tech-priest of the Adeptus Mechanicus who commands the Mechanicus' military forces and seek to advance military technology.

The Magi of the Priesthood of Mars are the masters of much of what remains of the vast and potent military secrets of the Dark Age of Technology, particularly the ancient technology of combat robots, the Battle-Automata. To them the pursuit and preservation of the arcane mysteries of science and circuit are of far greater worth than petty wealth, worldly power or the lives of their fellow men.

A Tech-priest Dominus may live for many standard centuries or even millennia, prolonging their life through arcane science and progressive cybernetic conversion, willingly becoming something other than human as they seek to fulfil the Omnissiah's will.

Shapers of destruction, masters of the Cult Mechanicus, the Tech-priests Dominus can reduce entire worlds to ruin. They can command a city to be broken down until not a single rockcrete brick rests upon another, or order an entire intelligent species eradicated and expunged from the history books.

These feats they accomplish not through diplomacy, but via the relentless, merciless application of firepower, for it is they that command the Mechanicus' Skitarii Legions, Electro-priesthood and Legio Cybernetica.

The vaunted rank of Dominus is bestowed only on those of the Cult Mechanicus with a true talent for war; those who believe the supremacy of the Machine God is to be proven at every opportunity. Though they are as likely to hail from the laboratories of the Magos Biologis as they are from the war halls of the Magi Militarum, each is an expert in weapons arcana.

To them the secrets of the battlefield are laid bare. Every bullet's ballistic trajectory, every las-pack's current capacity and every battle engine's optimal fire solution flickers in their mind's eye. They feast on raw data and cerebro-stimulants, allowing them to coordinate frontline tactics and exload war-psalms from their Vox arrays even as they visit destruction personally upon the foe.

None are safe, for a Tech-priest Dominus can tear the Machine Spirit from a super-heavy tank even as he blasts its infantry escort to coiling wisps of steam. To augment their own formidable weaponry, the contents of the vast vaults of the Forge Worlds are available to the Tech-priests Dominus, allowing them to carry to war ancient relics capable of extraordinary feats of destruction.

Cortex Controller - An arcane device and wonder of the Mechanicum's arts, comprising the reasoning control centre and animating machine-spirit of a Battle-automata.
Refractor Field - This device is a defensive shield generator designed for personal protection. They encompass the wearer in an energy field or force barrier which serves to refract or deflect impacts and energy discharges, although the need for the wearer to move and fight, as well as their power consumption prevents them from being anywhere near inviolable to attack.
Conversion Field - This device emits a powerful gravitic energy shield which surrounds its user and is capable of converting large amounts of kinetic energy into harmless light.

His Ark Mechanicus:
An Ark Mechanicus is a vast Imperial starship that the Adeptus Mechanicus uses to scour the stars for their ultimate holy grail, a working Standard Template Construct. This quest is the most central tenet of the Mechanicus' religious Quest for Knowledge. As is to be expected, each Ark Mechanicus is filled with some of the most advanced current technology in the entire Imperium. Though these rare, nigh-mythical ships are seldom brought to battle, when they do enter combat they can bring to bear nearly impenetrable defences and weaponry whose range and firepower puts even that of Imperial Battleships to shame. An Ark Mechanicus is also outfitted with industrial capabilities rivalling that of many hive cities, with kilometre upon kilometre of manufactoria, refineries, crackling Plasma Reactors and laboratories, test ranges, chemical vats and gene-bays.
