2001
Dawn of the Devil's Sun, a five-piece thrash metal band from Defiance, OH, forms underground. The band becomes known by a growing fanbase for their consistently ambitious technical song structures. Featuring a number of unknown talents, the lineup includes Tia Mahana on bass, Matt Carey on drums, John Aldritch on guitar, and were led by Vince Matthews, who would later be recruited by John Gallagher into Dying Fetus. Dawn of the Devil's Sun achieves minor underground fame before disbanding in 2003 in favor of seeking new ventures.
2004
Dawn of the Devil's Sun originals, bassist Tia Mahana and drummer Matt Carey, reconvene in the spring of 2004 and engage talks of a second band. The duo enters a creative phase and draw in brothers Adam and Danny Ehrlich to contribute to the songwriting effort. The band remains nameless at this time and begins scouting for fellow musicians to join the ranks.
2006
Mahana, Carey, and the Ehrlich brothers form to create Language of Shadows. The group recruits brothers Matteo and Pedro Garcia on vocals and keys. They begin touring Ohio and surrounding states, becoming notorious throughout the metal scene for their offensive, at times disturbing, performances. They release LPs to sell at shows and begin producing their first EP this year.
2007
Eight months following the recruitment of the Garcia brothers, it is revealed that the two have been directly involved in the first degree murder of Defiance College student Sasha Robertson. Language of Shadows becomes completely overcast with scandal and troubled by legal difficulties during this time. The Garcia brothers are quietly removed from the band during the legal proceedings. In late 2007, a video surfaces purporting to show scenes of Robertson's death and the Garcia brothers claim that the footage contains proof of the presence of Language of Shadows members Mahana, Carey, and at least one of the Ehrlich brothers during Robertson's murder, unidentifiable due to face masks, dark clothing, and grainy footage. The footage is leaked by an unknown party onto the Internet where it is marketed as a "snuff film" and connected to Language of Shadows, rumored to be a means of adding to the brutality of the band's growing reputation. The remaining band members hire an attorney in their defense.
2008
Language of Shadows becomes known worldwide for their legal entanglements. As a by-product of their notoriety, their music sees a jump in popularity. The Garcia brothers go on trial this year and face life in prison for first degree murder. Metal fans are torn between supporting remaining Language of Shadows members and reviling them for their supposed deeds. During this time, a number of other rumors surface surrounding and targeting band members. Late this year, they go on trial as accessories to the murder of Sasha Robertson and are found innocent. The three figures in the footage are later identified as friends to Matteo and Pedro Garcia. The remaining members of Language of Shadows retreat from the public eye and struggle to protect their privacy at this time. They enter an indefinite hiatus and engage talks of disbanding and name changing to disentangle themselves from the Garcia brothers' crimes.
2010 - 2011
Language of Shadows' popularity steadily grows among metal fans. They sign their first legitimate contract with record label Nuclear Blast this year. In early 2010, they resurface with newcomers Anya Aaronson and Hibiki Yamane and play their first show since the Sasha Robertson trial in New York at the Lakeview Amphitheater to an enormous turnout—a sold out show. The Lakeview show receives mixed reviews from music critics and fans alike for their more subdued, doom-like aesthetic, a dramatic veering from their thrash roots and the heavy, racing pace and gory brutality of their initial LPs and underground shows. Mahana takes the lead this year with a vast range of guttural vocals and throaty screams backed by Matt Carey and Adam Ehrlich, and adds operatic themes to the band's repertoires. While many fans turned away from Language of Shadows and their new themes and sound, many more took their places.
2012 - present
Language of Shadows finds stability in their current lineup in the coming years. They welcome guest vocalists and instrumentalists from time to time to both shows and album recordings. They release six full-length albums, two EPs, and one compilation with record labels Nuclear Blast, Goomba, and Relapse, though the EP of 2006 remains, and decidedly will remain, unreleased. They become known for theatrical "neverending" album tours, shows played in two acts, including an intermission, performing albums in their entirety to great success. Though the scandals of the past are still rehashed from time to time in interviews, the majority of the related backlash has passed.
