Bayne is a very old character circa 2005 or so. There's a lot more going on with her than I'm willing to put on the site.

Bayne pursues a void demon known as the "The Indwelling." He resides in a realm called Zanvi - aka her homeworld, a place of demons, illusions, deadly beasts, and shadow magic - in a plaga (region) called the Sheol Forest. Zanvi is barred to her as a result of banishment through the Sheol gate, inflicting her with the Indwelling's Curse and saddling her with the singular mission of exterminating her rival sister, Desarai, or finding a way to reverse or revise the Indwelling's curse upon herself. She pursues the task with an unshakeable, tenacious fervor. If Bayne had it her way, she would do both, but without Desarai, the curse is lifted and the Indwelling becomes excessively more difficult to reach. Without the Indwelling, she has no way to track Desarai, and without Desarai, she has no way to track the Indwelling. Working for, while trying to destroy, her benefactors, she has traipsed after her sibling for years, bringing her to the brink of death on more than one occasion only to be interrupted or have her kill stolen on separate accounts.

Except if her sister is dead, why keep hunting? The endless cycle of rebirth for the banished. When reborn, the Cursed lose all memory of their original purpose, often restored late in the next life. Assuming they regain it at all and the cycle of death doesn't repeat before their memories are restored, like it did for Desarai. Whether she will ever recover her memories, her purpose, is a mystery, but Bayne doesn't need her to remember for her to be useful.

Her sister birthed a daughter. Desdemohnah. The girl is oblivious to her strength and purpose after being reincarnated, much like Desarai, and yet fulfilled the requirements at each birth necessary for her role in the siblings' schemes. A symbol of hope for their family, her niece is the bastard child of one of the Indwelling's disciples. The child foretold by old god, Veles, to return through the gate and slaughter the Indwelling. Bayne considers her niece an abomination as a result of her heritage, one she must keep alive long enough to fulfill her prophesized destiny and then bury her alongside the Indwelling. Over the years, she's occasionally convened with Desdemohnah to train her and fill in the gaps in her memories. Despite the comradery, her resolve is unwavering.

For now, she searches for shadow beacons. Pockets in the continuum that allow access to fortifications formed within the aether suspended between Zanvi and other various realms. Outposts of demon scouts such as these are regularly wiped out by Bayne for hefty sums of gold, working as a mercenary for a demon group called the Eclipse.

Diana's mine now. Least, I purchased her. Finally. As if I haven't been wanting to for a while. Took her out to the Tether. Still getting used to the symbiote bonded to her. Lashing. Lash. It's weird, but exposure makes it easier and the benefits are definitely nothing to gawk at. She's a force to be reckoned with and the fire in her eyes is nothing short of sexy. A walking sin.

No wonder to think she ran into a brothel madam by the name of Mistress Anessix -- Six. Happened upon the Pink Lotus trying to track down Mashenka after a job. Portal took me where I needed to go, but he wasn't there. Headed up to the bar, got some food, met Six and Tier, the cook. Could smell Diana on Six and we chatted some, and then who appears? Diana. Painted a large, beautiful canvas of Six on a moonlit balcony, all red silk and fancy lighting effects. She's talented with a brush.

Apparently, she's learning to strip tease and pole dance. And I caught them getting in on a couple nights ago while we were staying at the brothel, too. Then what does she do? Drops it in my lap that Six wants to hire us. Us.

First, I had to talk to Six. She's considering Diana for a courtesan. Because of Lash and the shapeshifting powers that gives Diana. And yet they'd rather be a guard. Weird how that works. I'm still not sure how to feel. About Diana taking sexual partners for coin. Guard, though? I can be a guard for that kind of price. We agreed on freelance services. Feel it out. Guess we'll see.

I met a blonde with looks to kill. Bred and born to be an unassuming temptress. Tall, fit, painfully beautiful. Even just thinking about her takes my breath away. She reminds me in some small ways of the woman who brought her here, to this world, but she is wholly different.

Except I can't help wondering why. Or even the how. There's so much more to Fawn than I truly first understood. How much more to Diana is there that I don't know about?

She's that dangerous kind of beautiful. The kind that sucks you in and doesn't let you go. For once, I might actually go back somewhere without a job to drag me first. So long as it means seeing her again.

Assignments don't wait for the holidays to be over. Demons probably think it's a good time to attack. Everyone gathered together. Celebrating.

There's a breach on Drakoria. Some place called Blackwood. One of the Eclipse scouted them and, lucky me, I won the draw to eliminate them. Shouldn't take long, but I've never been so reluctant to leave before.

First night, I met a wolf at the tavern. If he told me his name, I've forgotten it. He was odd, but charming, and very interested in my weapons. I taught him to shoot. Pulverized a few lemons, a potato... He didn't miss as much as I thought he might. Took to it like a natural. Seemed really interested in protecting his den. His family. Maybe his 'She Above' was guiding his aim that night. Before I left, I fashioned him a necklace from one of the spent casings and a bullet.

Against my better judgement, I've gotten attached to the place. The debauchery, the booze, the secrets, and even a couple of the people have sucked me in this time round, lacking the blinders I wore last time, single-minded in my mission. They'll be waiting for me to show complacency so they can strike, waiting for me to get comfortable and settle in. Some days I wonder if I haven't already.

The Eclipse will want to test Fawn's true nature and Mashenka's blood sample is yielding perplexing results. I'm curious to see if they can isolate and develop their own compound from it. Needless to say, I'm apprehensive of the field tests they've ordered. Enacting them will be easy. Dealing with the results may be difficult.

Hopefully getting close doesn't prove to be a mistake. I worry that I've put them both in harm's way. Even with his reassurances, he may bite off more than he can chew, getting involved with what - who - he doesn't understand. Yet I want more. This last October was one of the best months of my life and I know I'll crave that kind of elation every season. Things would be easier if there wasn't so much good under the bullshit.

The Tether hasn't changed much. Those that remain stick together in tighter packs, as if afraid to lose one another - clinging, with claws out.

I keep running into one of the slaves. Sometimes I'm not sure it's entirely by accident. Her name is Fawn, belongs to some person she calls Demiurge. After she did something to get Fawn away from the faeries early, my initial skepticism faded. Got a new sword from her. Still needs a good name, but it's fun.

Managed to get a spray from some Mashenka guy that repels them. Traded him one of the Cains for a few years supply - and a pair of guns that are quickly becoming new favorites. Not really sure what to make of him yet. First time I met him, he was drunk as a skunk. Called me 'sexy.' Still not sure how I feel about that, either.

Bayne grew up in a mountain stronghold under chieftain parents, a father that led his ever active garrison with an iron fist and a mother that wanted nothing more than to return to a peaceful, quiet life. Her mother had fur as pale as the icy white peaks, lean and sturdy of stature, with kind unseeing silver eyes, her father black as night, strong and unyielding as the mountain, with fierce red eyes full of hate. Despite her mother’s disability and seemingly delicate stature, she was effective in the ring against any opponent thrown at her, and any newcomers were quickly taught their place beneath her boot. Yet her father seemed to care for her only so much as she was an equal in strength and ability rather than showing her any true love or affection. Such gradually chipped away at her psyche and sent her mother into a spiraling depression that eventually ended in her throwing herself on the mercy of their enemy’s sword to end her suffering. To all, it appeared she died in battle, but Bayne knew better. By then, she was a combat hardened teen, groomed by her father to fight since she was old enough to hold a sword, in the throes of war with a rival clan that would drag on for a hundred years.

As the second born after the untimely death - later uncovered as an assasination - of a prodigal first born sister, Natalia, Bayne spent her early years trying to fit a pair of shoes that she could never fill. Living under her father’s constant disappointment challenged her and drove her to maddening feats of strength and fury to prove herself. She rose through the ranks, equally as effective as her parents with a sword, and the single bright star in her mother’s otherwise dismal life. Yet it was never enough for her father and she was soundly beaten at the age of twelve by her then eight year old sister, Desarai, who was believed to be Natalia’s reincarnation and undoubtedly their father’s new favorite. Such resulted in the mantle of inheritance passing from her to her sister, spurring a lifelong hatred and rivalry between the pair of them as Bayne resented the way she skated through life and felt her sister did not value or respect the clan’s future she was now responsible for.

After such, her father’s intense rigor turned on Desarai, leaving Bayne with far more free time, and a squadron all her own to lead and train. She spent such time in close relations with her mother during her final years, taking on her mother’s more feminine traits and higher education. Her mother taught her how to use the hell gates, summon portals, and harness her demonic powers for methods outside the use of combat. Those last few years before the war began and her mother passed remain some of her fondest and most cherished memories. To this day, the squadron she led remains at her beck and call, inducted into the same mercenary group, Eclipse, that she now serves.

Near the end of the war, Desarai received a vision from Fenris that drew her into the depths of the Sheol Forest, where the Indwelling’s stronghold was located. There she arranged a deal with the enemy leader. Peace, in exchange for their father’s life and Desarai’s self-imposed exile on Earth through the Sheol Gate. Bayne was ignorant of the details for several years, but there was nothing her sister could do to make Bayne forgive the traitorous act. The clan disbanded, torn apart by the sudden loss of their leader and his named heir, with the eldest too blinded by hatred and fueled by revenge to see the missed opportunity to rebuild. A regret that she would live with daily for the rest of her life.

Bayne trailed her sister, where she discovered she’d ensconced with a black brute with red eyes, similar in appearance to their father, but with the caring heart they’d always wished he had. Stalking her for months, she finally managed to catch Desarai alone, waging a battle that leveled the surrounding area for miles into a glassy, dead landscape. The commotion drew her sister’s new clan to save her, forcing Bayne to flee, but at least she knew the truth. She never left the immediate area after her sister’s clan took up residence in the newly transformed territory, always a bane lingering at the edge of her sister’s perfect life. Every scout sent to spy turned up missing and Bayne could never be found in the same place twice. Eventually, they stopped trying and Bayne was able to fade into the shadows, constantly watching for her next opportunity. {WIP}
