The Bancroft DynastyAnd its Loose Cannon
The Bancroft family has been afflicted with lycanthropy since the middle ages, when Porter Bancroft cut one too many corners when gambling away family funds. The man ended up on the brink of death, with vicious claw marks adorning his body. Once he recovered, Porter brushed everything under the rug, until the first full moon since his assault. His body was painfully morphed into the form of a canine. The first transformation was an utterly terrifying experience, but the man soon learned to appreciate the power he had been given.
When his eldest son turned ten, he infected the boy, then his daughter when she reached the age. It was a nonstop cycle, the Bancrofts had become a family of beings said to only exist in folktales. Since then, the family has happily passed down the affliction, making sure to keep it within the main branch of the family to make sure no outsider would catch wind of their newfound powers.
They used their powers to earn devilish amounts of wealth, being able to propel the family into nobility status after funding a war or two. To others, the curse of lycanthropy could be seen just as it is called, a curse, but the Bancrofts saw it as a blessing. Now, four hundred years later, in the year 1843, the family is thriving, with their current patriarch being Harold Bancroft, the Duke of Rutland.
Ford Bancroft is the second-born son of Harold Bancroft, the Duke of Rutland. Because of his family's noble rank, he believes he is free of consequence. Without the burden of having to inherit any major titles, he spends the majority of his days getting into fights and drinking. It is only when courting season comes around that he is even mildly well-behaved, although a fight or two isn't rare.
His relationship with his father and brother is strained, mostly from childhood neglect. Instead of treating both sons fairly, Harold preferred to spend all of his time grooming Ford's older brother, Thomas, to be the perfect duke. It caused tension between the two brothers, but the two men get along at times.
When Ford turned ten, he was informed by his father and uncle about the family's hidden, voluntary illness. Like any sane person, he was stunned and immediately reluctant, but it was soon made clear that he wasn't given a choice in whether he wanted to become a lycanthrope. Just like every Bancroft in the beginning, he was horrified of what he possessed but would soon grow to appreciate the power. Ford appreciated it a bit too much. It allowed him an outlet of strength and aggression, something his family would soon try to keep in check. He became somewhat of a loose cannon, but he wasn't stupid, he wouldn't risk exposing the family.
