Personal Appearance
Anatoli has high eyebrows, steely grey eyes and a prominent nose. His hair is dark black, like most of those from central Russia, cut medium-short for a life of combat. His facial hair is trimmed close to his face, as he likes to avoid an improper seal on his gas mask, but being clean shaven in this new apocalyptic world is all but a pipe dream, and more often than not he lets it grow to medium-short length. He could have been called handsome or maybe even boyish a few years ago, before the outbreak aged him somewhat. He has had to kill his own parents, after all. His face is thinner, his complexion paler, but in all honesty, the ragged sort of look does suit him quite well. An exceptionally strong man from his extremely active life, he is capable of performing tough labor, as most soldiers are, and has a defined body because of it, even if he is only of average height and build. Finally, he sports a small scar on his stomach, from a stab wound he received during the closing days of the Second Chechen War.
Clothing and Style
Were you to look at him with an objective eye, you might consider Anatoli to be straight out of the 60s. Sporting an old dark green telogreika and ancient Red Army budenovka hat, one could picture him perhaps stalking through the Hungarian woods, helping to extend the reach of the Soviet Union beyond its borders, when in reality his clothing style is exceedingly utilitarian. After a grueling trip over the great steppes, he needed clothes that would keep him warm but not weigh him down, and the old military kit from his stalker stash served him better than any modern synthetic jacket could. He has thick brown wool mittens for his hands in freezing weather, and knitted grey gloves for less formidable temperatures. On his legs he wears plain brown afghanka trousers, secured by a simple belt. His feet bear Russian military ankle boots, as sturdy as ever, if quite dirty and muddy from years of relentless use. He has a plain grey woolen jumper that he wears under his telogreika, and his Spetsnaz telnyashka serves as a constant inner layer. Over everything he wears various pieces of old Soviet webbing to securely mount his pistol, ammunition pouch, blanket, bedroll, and burlap sack. Since leaving Vladivostok, he has had to adapt his wardrobe somewhat, as the climate is much warmer than what he is used to, and he is often seen wearing simply his undershirt and trousers in the summer months. His budenovka too has lost much of its utility, and while he mostly goes bareheaded these days, he still keeps it with him, as a reminder of home. He has a small, simple clockwork watch with a leather strap, which is usually hidden under his telogreika. The face has a small crack in it, from a tumble he took in Vladivostok.
Weapons & Kit
Though he fought through the Chechnyan campaigns with a trusty kalashnikov, Anatoli has needed to adapt to the shambling hordes of the undead. A fully automatic weapon does nothing but encourage the waste of ammunition in his eyes, when headshots are so valuable against these zombies. Instead, he has opted to carry an old SKS (Samozaryadny Karabin Simonova - Simonov Self-Loading Carbine), for a combination of precision, fire rate, and reliability. Aside from a sling, it contains no special attachments of any kind, for ease of maintenance and transport. Though never trained as a marksman, Anatoli has plenty of experience from his childhood to draw on, and can be considered quite the shot at medium range. When the action gets uncomfortably close, however, he has yet another old Soviet weapon to rely on. In a cross draw hip holster at his front, he keeps an M1895 'soldier' model Nagant pistol, a very reliable design. Though single-action and gate-loaded, which makes for cumbersome reloads and manual cocking, the Nagant's gas seal system allows for a threaded barrel and a BRAMIT device to suppress his shots extremely well, even better than most modern pistols. Needless to say, the ability to fire a shot and remain undetected to the wider horde is something that he simply cannot pass up. Of course, the benefits of such robust and easily repairable weapons also cannot be understated, but with Anatoli's specific experiences as a stalker, he is particularly familiar with their maintenance, systems, and operation.
Preferring to travel light, Anatoli has no proper backpack or vehicle to speak of. For a short time when passing over the Gobi desert, he rode horseback, but for the most part he sticks to his own two feet, moving without drawing attention. All of his kit is worn mostly mounted to his back in the old soviet style, though he does posses a sack for his more fiddly possessions. Much of it was scavenged from abandoned military installations during his time as a stalker, or kept from his own time in the military, a fact that speaks for its reliability. At present he wears;
- His old medic's satchel, containing the comprehensive supplies of two epinephrine auto-injectors, a proper syringe, four sets of compression bandages, a vial of boric acid for infections, a small bottle of hydrogen peroxide, a roll of safety clips, a pack of blood plasma, intravenous probe, stainless steel scissors, stainless steel scalpel, stainless steel kidney dish, water purification tablets, penicillin, pipette, morphine ampule, set of syringe heads, tweezers, gauze dressings, sutures, roll of medical thread and a saline solution pack. The satchel itself is worn slung over his shoulder, but its strap is also tucked under his belt to prevent it from shifting around too much when he is on the move.
- A small tin cup, typically clipped to his satchel for brewing soup and dissolving water purification tablets
- A canteen, worn at the back of his belt
- A model 4A1 gas mask, with two filters to spare
- A bedroll, strapped to the small of his back
- A hand axe, worn in a sheath at his left hip
- A folded grey wool blanket, worn over his frame in the old Russian infantry style. This can function as a sort of makeshift bandolier, but mostly he simply uses it to keep warm at night
- A small pouch on his belt, to store loose rounds for both his pistol and his rifle. It also contains a two strip clips for his rifle and a spare cylinder for his pistol, incredibly simple but valuable tools for faster reloads. What ammunition cannot be stored here is kept in a box in his sack. At present he has thirty-six 7.62x39 rounds for his rifle, and twenty-one 7.62x38 rounds for his pistol, not including his supplies to make more
- A pistol holster, worn at his front. It does not allow for the BRAMIT device of his pistol, and so he generally keeps the device itself in his sack
- A pair of binoculars, hanging loose from his neck and tucked under his blanket
- Of course; his sack which is worn just above the bedroll on his back. It too has a strap which is slung over his shoulder and runs under his belt for stability. It contains various bits and pieces such as canned food, a small sewing kit, enough empty cartridge casings, bullet heads and gunpowder to make about sixty-four more x39 rounds and thirty-six more x38 rounds (all stored in a tin box), a lighter, a bottle of lighter fluid, scraps of newspaper for kindling, supplies for rolling cigarettes (stored in a cardboard box), a multitool pocketknife, varying lengths of rope, fishing line & hook (coiled in a closed tray), a compass & map, a bottle of anti-radiation pills, a small geiger counter, two bottles of vodka stuffed with cloth (to be used both for drinking and as molotov cocktails), a ramrod and gun cleaning kit, an old rag, a book of matches, a whetstone, and probably the most modern piece of technology he owns; an pair of OH-1X20 night vision goggles with a headstrap to mount them. They suck the power out of batteries very quickly however, and so he uses them sparingly.
