Badges and Training, preferably of skills he already has familiarity in, or in the same wheelhouse. He is a laborer and former farmer, craftsman. Focus on physicality.
I will not be seeking any sort of arcana or magic training without a long-term plot due to his abilities needing a deep connection to develop and be of use.
Mortecai might come off as someone seeking freedom, but he does best under the control of being a thrall, and I would be interested in the ownership being a dynamic that uses him, and has little interest in giving him freedom. Will very likely flourish when given regular attention and plenty of work.
