History
For years, he had stood with his twin brother, Kieran, fighting for the same cause. But now, their differences in faith had put them at odds. As a devout Catholic, Kelly fought for his religion as much as he did for his people. He had seen too many atrocities committed against Catholics, and he would not stand idly by while his brothers and sisters suffered.
The Battle of Kinsale was a turning point in Irish history. Kelly had fought alongside the Spanish and Irish forces against the English, and while the Catholics had lost, the battle had shown the English that they would not be able to subjugate the Irish without a fight. For years, Kelly continued to fight against English oppression and for the Catholic faith. He was at the forefront of the Nine Years' War and saw the Irish forces fighting against English rule.
In 1641, the Irish Rebellion broke out, and Kelly found himself once again fighting for his people. This time, he was on the opposite side of his brother, who fought for the Protestant forces. It was a difficult time for the twins, but they both knew they had to follow their conscience.
The Cromwellian Conquest of Ireland in the mid-17th century saw Kelly fighting against the English once again. The massacre of Drogheda was a dark time in Irish history, and Kelly was among the rebels who fought back against the English forces.
