The Story So Far

Noel was born in a small village; his place of birth was near the border with a nation his own homeland had long been at odds with. He was raised to have pride in where he came from, which naturally resulted in some disdain for the foreign. Patriotism coursed through him like a stimulant, and after graduating from his schooling he enlisted in the Army. He thought to find meaning in his life there, in making his country a better place to live for his mother and father, for the people he grew up. It came as a surprise to many who knew him, but at the same time it was almost to be expected. He was an intelligent, sensitive young man, with hopes and dreams of making the world better - of helping others, of his deeds making the soil fertile for future generations to grow and prosper.

Those ancient fires men lit so long ago, the flames of nationalism, had other plans. War erupted just a few months after he enlisted with that old enemy across the demarcation line. A weapon shoved into his hands and orders into his brain, he soon found himself at the front. On the way there, he had been eager. He did not want to hurt anybody, but if his country could make life better for the citizens there - it would be worth it. But War is not a game, and in its depths the men who do not lose their minds lose something else. For Noel, it was his belief that the war would be good for anybody involved.

After a particularly disturbing incident, Noel took the first opportunity he could to run. He tore off his national insignia, packed as much food and supplies as he could, filled his canteen, shouldered his weapon, and set off in the early hours of the morning when the watch was changing. He deserted, and sought to run as far from the war as his legs could take him. S

Now he seeks a new place to belong, a place where the wounds of his experience can heal, where he can find some real meaning in life - some meaning beyond death, beyond hope. He seeks salvation from his misdeeds; he seeks affirmation of his hope, above all, that the world will ever be a better place for anyone.
