  • Once Upon a Time.

    A familiar phrase, isn't it? One that evokes feelings of wonder, excitement, and curiosity. Tales of enchantments, magical creatures, and adventures set in fantastical realms have been a part of our cultural consciousness since the dawn of storytelling. However, not all of these tales were fiction. While many stories about magical creatures were just that—fantastical stories—there was one creature whose existence was neither made up nor exaggerated: the Fae.

    What are Fae?

    The Fae, also known as the Fair Folk, the Good Neighbors, or the Gentry, were a mysterious and elusive race of magical beings who inhabited a hidden realm known to them as the Fair Lands. This place, shaped and molded by their powerful magic, was a blend of lush forests, mist-filled glens, and ethereal landscapes, and was home to a vast array of unique and exotic plants and creatures.

    One of the residents of the Fair Lands was a Fae that was known to those she met, simply, as the Pale Lady. She was described as a woman with pale, perfect skin that carried upon its surface the whitish glow of mother-of-pearl, with an extraordinary amount of curled hair as white as snow and shining like moonlight that billowed about her as if blown by invisible winds. Her eyes were alight with the light of Fae magic, and she had long, thick eyebrows stylistically terminated in a flourish. 

    The Lady was dressed in immaculately tailored clothes; her shirt was pristine, the color of ivory, with not a single wrinkle or blemish to be found, and fitted as perfectly as could be.

    The vest she wore was of a hue close to earth, warm and inviting, with a slight sheen that tempted one to want to run their fingers over it, and from her neck was an array of neckcloths—all of them made from the finest muslin and whiter than the wings of a dove—and were stiff as the pages of a music book.

    Her coat was as green as the leaves of a freshly blossomed tree in early summer, and her breeches were a pristine white, with not a single stain or smudge to be seen, and were tucked perfectly into the tops of her boots, whose polish was so mirror-like that one could plainly see their own reflection staring back at them. And always she had in her possession a strange, magic ball. It was as if someone had frozen a piece of the sky itself and enclosed it within a glass globe. The orb trailed after her, never more than a foot away, and was always adorned in different hues. It would change colors as the sun and moon in the sky did, shifting from a brilliant blue in the daytime to a fiery orange when the sun was setting.

    The Fae were nothing if not vain creatures, and the Lady was no exception. Every article of clothing, every strand of hair, and even the manner in which she breathed was a deliberate choice; though, one had to wonder how much of it was real and how much was simply an illusion to make it seem as such.

  • Background


    In the realm of the Fae, there existed a small kingdom known as Swallowed Joy. It was a place of extraordinary beauty and enchantment, with rivers that were like liquid gold, flowing through jungles of weeping willows that were white as ivory before cascading down scarlet cliffs to pour into lakes of shimmering amber.

    The meadows of Swallowed Joy were awash in an array of pink and red blooms, each one glistening with dew that sparkled like a million tiny jewels in the sunlight, and each one filled with a nectar that was sweet and thick, with a strangely pleasant aftertaste that lingered on the tongue. The nectarous scent of the flowers was easily carried along the wind, and with the humidity and heat of the kingdom, one may feel as if they are walking through a sweet, sticky cloud, a haze that makes even the simplest of movements seem languid and slow.

    Ever present, the sound of a heartbeat resounded throughout Swallowed Joy, permeating every corner of the kingdom with a constant, rhythmic beating that resonated in the very earth, the trees, and the sky, and the architecture of the kingdom was designed in such a way as to echo and amplify the sound of the heartbeat; the towers were tall and wide at the base, tapering to a delicate point. The buildings and structures all seemed to flow and undulate, with edges that were rounded and smooth, and even the palace of Swallowed Joy was a beautiful circular structure that was laid out much like a large, pink pearl.

    It was a kingdom straight out of a fairy tale, one that the Lady had great pride in. However, despite what one might have believed upon seeing this kingdom, the Lady herself did not hold a high standing within the Fae Court. By human standards, she was little more than a minor noble—one who had more than enough free time to get herself into trouble.

    So, the Lady had found herself a rather peculiar hobby. She enjoyed mortals—people, the things they did, the things they built, their art, their wars, their reasoning—nothing they did seemed to make the slightest bit of sense to her, yet she couldn't deny that she found it all incredibly interesting. The only problem was that she had no territory, none in the mortal world anyway. Any old pixie could build themselves a kingdom in the Fair Lands, but if they couldn't claim territory beyond them, they might as well not have had any at all!

    The Lady, obsessed as she was with mortal kind, could not accept this. So, she stole something from the Court, a bit of knowledge that would allow her to hold onto a fraction of her power outside of the Fair Lands—nobody would miss it, after all, and what harm was she doing by taking it for herself? It wasn't like anyone else was using it.

    And, so long as they never found out what she took, she was certain that everything would be fine.

  • Personality

    The Lady was someone who was endlessly intrigued by the movements and actions of mortal beings. She seemed to find great amusement in observing their interactions, delighting in what she perceived as their peculiarities and idiosyncrasies. How did this work? Why did they do that? What reason could this possibly have? As wondrous and magical as her own home was, it was the world of mortals that excited her the most!

    She was endlessly curious and constantly seeking out new knowledge and experiences. While her inquisitiveness seemed to be an inherent characteristic, her impulsivity and tendency to leap into things without considering the possible consequences gave the impression of someone whose excitement far outpaced their capacity for rationality.

    And, much like a hummingbird, her attention span was fleeting and difficult to capture. One moment, she would be focused on a task with a singular intensity, and the next, she would flit away in search of a new fascination. Her curiosity was insatiable, and she would pester any creature that caught her eye, unconcerned with the potential discomfort or awkwardness her prying presence might bring. 

    While she had no issue expressing her opinions and desires outright, she was also difficult to read. She was prone to latching onto ideas and carrying them out regardless of how others might feel, and while she did not seem particularly malicious, her actions could often lead to great and sometimes even tragic misunderstandings. Even if the Lady was trying to be nice, her lack of understanding of social norms and actions meant there was almost always something "off" about it, potentially leaving those affected feeling at least slightly uncomfortable.
