  • Life After the Army

    SSmith3A.pngWhen I got home and was discharged, I was picked up at the airport by Garrett, an old friend from school. I soon found out how good of an old friend he was ... he was engaged to be married to Summer Charlesford, the love of my life! Also, I would find out that Summer apparently hated him ...

    I would soon learn that Garrett had manipulated both me and Summer... not just while I was gone, but all through school since 7th grade; going way back to almost the beginning of our friendship. My first week back home was a real eye-opener, and it ended up with Garrett and I getting arrested for being drunk and disturbing the peace. I only spent three days in County thanks to a recommended lawyer Hannah Taylor, a lawyer that Detective Julia Atkinson put him in touch with. It all was possible due to Scott's first lieutenant he had in Afghanistan, Steve Harrison.

    After I recovered from being conked by the cop at Summer's parents place, and the skull fracture he sustained by Garrett hitting him over the head with a bottle, I saw a difference in Summer. As much as I wanted to reignite what Summer and I had in high school, things were not the same. She was still marrying Garrett, and I felt a distance between us. I had to leave town, so I went to Oakwood and stayed with Steve and Tiffany for a while. When Summer and I finally talked to each other, More light was shone on what had happened that night we had graduated high school.

    It is the way of first loves. They will never be forgotten. I will always love her, but I can't see how the damage Garrett and the war did on us will ever be repaired. The scarring was just too much, and again, we eventually quit contacting each other. I kept her pictures and the letters I wrote her, but I stored them away, much like I stored away his memories of her.... always with him, but always with the regret of what could have been but was destroyed.

    After ruminating in Oakwood for a time, I took a job with Mosiac and went to Ukraine as part of a private military contract unit. I couldn't get war out of my head, so I went and found a new war to fight.

    About Summer
    Summer Charlesford ... the girl next door. We've been friends ever since we were infants and shared a blanket and our binkies in the park. We lived next door to each other, and our moms would socialize over coffee and my dad would work on her dad's car while her dad would give us sports tickets. The two of them liked to hang out together in my dad's garage. It was later I found out why.

    Summer and I held hands when we went to our first day of kindergarten and many assumed we were brother and sister. As we went through grade school, we stepped away from each other some as we developed our own circle of friends, but we were never far away from each other. We took swimming lessons together and we became fish. We'd play in the park, and I would tease Summer with the frogs and garter snakes I'd catch while Summer was a pro at being stealthy and ambushing me with water ballons and squirt guns.

    Summer hit adolescence before I did, and as we started 7th grade, I gave her space as she entered womanhood. It was a bit awkward for me as I became even more attracted to her. I didn't know at the time how she felt about me other than our forever friendship. But it became apparent later in the year. We started 'going together'... and we got even closer through high school.

    This is a little bit of prose I wrote on Summer's notebook in class the day after we first had sex... we were up most all night and she fell asleep during Mr Morrison's talk on sex education...

    'Where, of where do you go my love?
    Where does your dreams take you?
    I wish I could join you there, my love
    And we'll dance in the silvery light of the moon'

    About Garrett
    Both Summer and I met Garrett in 7th grade. He had attended a different elementary school than Summer and I, but he and I met and became friends in metal shop class when we paired up for a project. Garrett was a smooth-talking manipulator to the Nth degree. I didn't know of course. I thought he was suave and smooth and cool. Garrett from the start had his eyes on Summer from the third day I knew him. That was the day I introduced them to each other. Garrett was from the start playing a long game. It was Garrett that set things in motion at that graduation night party and managed to break Summer and I up. I don’t know what he told her, but somehow, he got her to hate me when I went into the army. I continued to write letters to her throughout my tours. Even sent a message to her phone number... 'Hi Summer. I hope this reaches you. I've written letters but haven't heard back. Your email bounces back, and your old phone number is no longer in use. I miss you. I miss talking to you and walking in the park with you. I hope life is going ok with you.
