The Aliens came in the 5000s, marking the beginning of the 1st Machine War. Androids, who had been specifically designed to protect humanity, launched their defensive, however small their numbers were. For thousands of years, the forces of the Resistance and the Machines, which had been created by the Aliens to empower their invasion, pushed against each other.
It is currently the 14th Machine War, which has proven to be among the most destructive. Just beforehand, humanity had sent a message to the Androids to announce their retreat to the moon – around the same time as YoRHa’s founding. It is the Androids’ hope that the elite forces of YoRHa could change the tide of war for Earth.

YoRHa
YoRHa is an elite military force of advanced androids designed to combat the invading aliens and machine lifeforms. Operating out of their headquarters in the Bunker, YoRHa is led by Command who receives orders from the Council of Humanity.
YoRHa is also used to refer to the advanced android models themselves, sometimes referred to as YoRHa units or YoRHa-type androids. Such individuals are distinct from other models of android for their combat prowess and enhanced abilities.

The Resistance
The Resistance is comprised of Androids and is one of the last fighting forces against the Machines on the surface of Earth. Led by Anemone (Automata)/Lily (1.1a), it holds a bastion within the City Ruins.

Machines
Machines, also known as Machine lifeforms, are a race of sentient robots. They were created by the Aliens thousands of years ago when they invaded Earth. It is the Androids' main purpose to destroy all Machines and retake Earth for humanity.
