  • Miho saved the world once. Nobody knows, and she’s okay with that.

    Once, she was a good student — the pride of the Tsuchiya household. There used to be dreams of being some kind of professor, even if she was still in that odd, non-committal stage that most teens tend to go through. Did well in her school’s baseball team, lived in a beautiful coastal town where every street could be on a post card. It started slow, the downfall. A few missing people here, strange skittering noises out of sight that would only fade once all corners of a room were checked, jerking visions of one’s own death caught in flashes through reflections. Several people noticed. Only a few investigated once they had become involved.

    Noriko kept hearing voices of the dead, begging for release. Shinji got caught up in a search for a missing friend and almost had his cheeks sliced open by a spirit with scissors. Chiya managed to get out of the grasp of a demon that offered too much by accepting nothing at all. Takao somehow muscled his way past a melted mass of flesh that used to be a class that never returned home from a field trip. Miho herself, she was dragged underwater in her school’s pool by a bloated and rotting corpse of last year’s swim coach and almost drowned. The five students knew something was wrong — how could anyone ignore what they experienced? Late nights meant for studying turned into even later nights prowling around town to find leads on the odd occurrences.

    The source of the strange happenings had been something called an ‘old one.’ Yzhugno, the Great Scales of Balance. Great suffering is rewarded with small blessings. Its heartbeat so strong that it tore invisible leylines that influenced the world. A crash of a public bus found all of its passengers dead but one; an infant. People fell into an endless sleep, just for a man left in a coma for ten years to wake up perfectly fine.

    There had been too many things to mention that the group challenged, navigated, fought. All they had were baseball bats, kitchen knives, dinghy oars — occasionally aided by magic that ate at their mind, devoured their skin. It all came to a head when the eternal storm came, the eye swirling around the local lighthouse. Everyone was split up, isolated, caught up in the arms of a monster or lost in the madness.

    Miho found herself at the lighthouse first. None of the others could be reached, so she found herself going up alone.

    The way up wasn’t a straight shot; traps tailored for her weaknesses somehow having been placed to specifically combat her. Pictures of her on her hunts, demanding to know obscure details of what she discovered. Handles to some odd contraction that zapped her until she managed to hang on for a minute, to let go would reset the clock. Everything achievable, everything torture, all of it a clock ticking down to the end times. Never did those spiral stairs lead to a man or beast. Just a simple set of scales sitting on the top floor; a single figurine weighing heavier than four others. To this day, Miho doesn’t fully remember how she destroyed it. She just remembers a panic, an anger, and swinging her baseball bat at it.

    The storm cleared. Night turned to day. Yhzugno’s doorway into the world, almost open, slammed shut. Exhausted, Miho collapsed at the top of the lighthouse, burnished brass and crushed figurines glinting in the rising sun.

    In the coming weeks, Miho would find out what happened to her friends. Noriko found a permanent home in a padded cell, babbling incoherently in different tones as if possessed by different people. Shinji was found in the tiny air ducts of his apartment building, stretched over twenty yards long without even a scratch on him, and yet somehow still alive and only able to scream. Chiya, later discovered in the high school’s boiler room, with a lantern near her charred remains, with the school doctor next to her; the girl’s lower half having been removed and replaced the back half of a fish in some gross amalgamation of a mermaid. Takao was cut open by a nearby shrine, his innards used to create a ritualistic symbol; body half ripped apart as if something came from within the new hole and now empty cavity in his chest. Yhzugno’s door was closed, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t there.

    Great suffering is rewarded with small blessings, after all.

    Mihozhi — the pride of the Tsuchiya family, once a grand student with the whole world ahead of her — disappeared shortly after that. The last time she was seen, the woman had a backpack over her shoulder and using her baseball bat as a walking cane as she down the only road out of town.

So far, she’s managed to tell it ‘no’ somehow, but each time the offer becomes harder and harder to resist…
