Formerly Captain, Beck Butler was a lot of things. A man of quick wit and sharp eye, with a charming crudeness about him that could disarm anyone for a laugh. His team would call him a good judge a character; if they were smart, they would also call him a prick. The British captain was a man who had poured every bit of his blood and sweat into his service career. It had formed him into the hard-worn grouch most people knew him as at present. But to be fair, he hadn't always been a posture child for Grumpy Bastardstm; however, after spending 23 years of his life in the armed forces, age and circumstances were often catalysts for change in a man.
Still, as he was approaching the big 4-5, Beck didn't feel particularly enlightened or different in any way that mattered. He was on injury-induced retirement now, trying to integrate back into a society that seemed alien to him. He had a stable payout from his services, a small home. He was even trying to get into some hobbies. Nothing beyond learning to live as a disabled vet in a society he hadn't participated in for two decades really stood out about his life.
Oh, other than Beck finally coming to terms with the fact that he was gay.
Now, everyone's thinking it; surely, former Troop Leader Butler had to make the realization earlier in his life, if not his military career. Somewhere in his span of years surrounded by hot, sweating men, sharing sunbaked smiles as they suffered together through combat drills. Perhaps a realization through many evenings of slapped asses during showers, nakedly wrestling a squad mate for the last good towel. The blowjobs; fast, hard hookups in whatever cramped space could provide privacy. Late night hand jobs. The camaraderie, the bond of brothers banded, curated a feeling of closeness he couldn't put into words. With death a shaky promise for all soldiers, there was a sacred level of familiarity amongst them.
Four years after a car bumper kissed his right knee goodbye, Beck would classify himself as a retired military man, new to town. Which town? All of them, especially the gay district of said town.
As he attempted to navigate civilian life, living between therapy appointments and PTSD nightmares, he was also taking a crack at his sexuality. From one rotten tutorial level into a high-action pvp combat scenario, ending in an open-world lifestyle simulator, Beck hadn't gotten a lot of downtime to explore himself, and essentially went with the flow when sexual hijinks ensued among squad mates. His fumbling point is finally coming to the realization that men were actually his preference, and proceeding onward from the recognition stage to more was going... slowly.
After an embarrassing Google search of 'how to tell if you're gay', Beck devised his plan of attack to overcome this new life obstacle. Observe and field test.
