Janelle was born six weeks premature, but was a strong fighter, overcoming the disadvantage. She was always a small, quiet child, and didn't cry much as an infant. Her mother said she was easy to raise. She did have a couple medical problems that lingered from her premature birth though. She would have asthma attacks, and it was discovered later that there were issues with her eyesight. She was a most inquisitive toddler, wanting to learn how things worked, and though she got along with other children in her daycare and early school grades, there were times she was reported for questionable behavior.

When Janelle was seven the family moved to San Francisco USA when her father received a promotion to lead the company's USA division. This of course upended the life she knew, and though she had begun to learn English in school, she only knew the basics when she went to second grade in their new city. She got teased a lot and bullied because of her 'Asian' voice and being so small, but Janelle kept herself on focus despite the troubles.

When she was thirteen, her family moved again when the company corporate office built a new flagship office in Los Angeles, and Janelle was forced to leave the few friends she had made through the years. She got her first phone so she could stay in touch, but she felt isolated and alone when she had to start junior high school in Santa Barbara. Again, Janelle would be teased, for many girls were maturing and she still appeared like a fifth-grader. It wouldn't be until the last months of seventh grade before she started menstruating, and soon after started growing hair down there. By this time though, Janelle had managed to make two friends; Connie Weeks and Linda Wu. They too tended to get teased by the 'mean girls' of the school; Connie for being overweight, and Linda because she had a lazy eye. The three seemed to bond from the fact they were considered social outcasts, and the fact they all craved friendship.

The summer before Janelle started in high school, her body decided to develop. Despite being five foot one and as light as a feather, she suddenly had boobs; her flat butt rounded; and her thighs filled in some. She was still skinny but didn't appear so much like a stick-figure. Once she started high school, there were some who hadn't seen her since the finished eighth grade and hardly recognized her. She still was an outcast, but a social clique of really smart kids that was called 'the brain trust' accepted 'the three freaks' as they had come to be called in junior high, into their fold. It seemed things were going well for Janelle at school with her exceptional grade point average, but after the winter break, Linda Wu didn't return. She had been in a car accident while driving to Oregon to visit family. The road was icy and a semi truck lost control and wrecked into them. Linda later died in the hospital. It was Janelle's first exposure to death, and it affected her greatly. Janelle seemed to retreat back into her shell of isolation, for her best friend was gone, and she wasn't as close to Connie as they had been in junior high. Connie who though still heavy, had grown taller and developed into a beautiful woman, and she became interested in boys and started partying. When her GPA slid below an acceptable level, she began to be shunned by the 'brain trust', and Janelle was encouraged to break her ties with her as well. But Janelle knew how hard it was to find and make friends.

Connie was her oldest friend now, and she would not so lightly cast her aside. Hanging on to Connie's friendship had adverse repercussions on Janelle. Though still a top student, she disassociated herself from the 'brain trust' and kept hanging around with Connie. But Connie had changed. She now was dating boys and she didn't seem to have the tie to give Janelle as much attention. Once school was out for summer, Janelle accompanied Connie to a weekend sleepover at her uncle's summer cabin. She and Linda had gone there a couple times after they met, and it was a fun time for them. But this time, it reminded her of Linda, and Connie had invited several of her 'new' friends. It basically was a weekend party by a lake. Janelle was as straight as an arrow, having not ever tried alcohol or tobacco even. She declined to take part in a marijuana smoking circle on the dock, and though Connie's new friends were respectful, Janelle couldn't help but feel like an outcast. She really didn't feel like she fit in. Connie convinced Janelle to take a can of beer and sit in the circle and just pass the joint along when it came around. Agreeing, Janelle made an attempt to try and take part in the socializing.

Of course, things like this have a tendency to take one on a path they had no intention of going down. With Connie's friends being nice and some actually talked to her, along with copious amounts of second-hand smoke being exhaled er way, Janelle started talking and laughing with them. She got thirsty and started sipping on the open beer in her hand, and she even tried to take a puff of a joint that came around. It reduced her into a crumpled, coughing girl who had never done anything like that before. Things got a bit fuzzy for Janelle after that, and it seemed the next thing she could remember was being awakened the morning they were to leave.

Once Janelle got home, she was so tired. She went to sleep and was late waking up for school. She was sore and had a headache, but did manage to get herself up before noon. She didn't feel good about herself. When she talked to Connie on the phone, she asked what all went on as she couldn't remember much. Connie was evasive saying everyone had a good time, and she didn't want to stay on the phone with her. Something happened, and Connie and Janelle grew apart after that.

The next year of high school came and Janelle found out that Connie had moved away. Though they weren't close anymore, Janelle still considered Connie a friend even if Connie didn't anymore. She didn't have any friends again, though she seemed to have some acquaintances who would say hi in the halls. Janelle didn't care to make any new friends, and she withdrew into doing the best she could at school. It paid off as she was the top of her class at graduation. She then went into university with that same drive, and majored in business. He first job she got was an internship with Steele Corp working in the human resources department. She did so well, she was hired on permanently as an HR advisor.
