His education was rigorous and deliberate: diplomacy, logistics, trade law, river navigation, language, cultural history, and conflict de-escalation. He was taught to read tide charts before he was taught battlefield formations, and to negotiate resource disputes before learning sword forms. His father, Sri Maharaka Jalani Varatama, believed that war was evidence of failed governance, and Raka was raised to prevent it, not wage it.

The dismantling of his world did not arrive as invasion banners or open siege. It came as treaties, debt restructuring, administrative oversight, survey teams, and “protectorate integration.” Foreign companies and imperial bureaucracies moved first through trade channels, then legal frameworks, then military enforcement. Raka witnessed, in slow, suffocating stages, the systematic reduction of Jalani sovereignty.

Sri Maharaka Jalani Varatama was arrested under economic obstruction law and executed following a pacification tribunal that was legally flawless and morally void. He was publicly branded a trade destabilizer and sedition sponsor. Privately, everyone in the estuary systems knew the truth: he had refused to sell the land beneath the people who depended on it. Raka’s mother, Dewi Suryani Jalani of House Nareja, attempted to preserve what she could through diplomacy and evacuation coordination. During the forced inland relocation of river populations, she organized covert escape routes for children and noncombatants. She died when one of the displacement convoys collapsed under overcrowding, disease, and supply denial. Survivors later claimed she ensured dozens of clan children escaped ahead of patrol schedules.
