Michael was born in Chicago to Anderson Steele and Marianne Holt-Steele and was their only child. He grew up in relative comfort in an affluent neighborhood and was always curious about things. His father's many business would have him gone frequently, and he was oftentimes left in the company of Rosalita Diaz, his nanny. Rose had a son around Michael's age named Clayton, and the two grew up together.

When the boys had graduated, Anderson sold several branches of his business empire and used his resources to leverage a hostile takeover of Harrison Holdings in San Francisco. He wasn't successful, but his company did acquire a number of businesses that one would thought would never be in the same portfolio.

Years later, with his son Michael as the Steele Group's chief financial officer, Anderson tried again to acquire Harrison Holdings. This time, a sale was negotiated and Harrison Holdings would remain intact and operate as a division of The Steele Group. Michael worked this agreement out despite his father's misgivings. As part of the agreement, Harrison Holdings split off several small branch companies it had acquired over the years. They were put under another division that the Steele Group had created from the buy out of Advance Solutions - a small but innovative provider of security services recently sold to Michael by its owner in an all-cash deal.

Michael was now responsible for most of the new acquisitions, and he now needed to go through their records and decide their fates. So it was that Michael's path into the business world was set before him, and it became clear that the apple didn't fall too far from the tree. He had as good of a grasp on the overall business of The Steele Group as his father did, with a unique insightful demeanor that his artistic mother instilled into him.
