  Personality, human: Damon was a free spirit, who was best friends with his younger brother stefan, instantly smitten with the vampire Katherine Pierce. His carefree life fell apart when stefan betrayed damon by alluding to their father that katherine was a vampire.
  
  Vampire: after he became a vampire, he left stefan's side, wanting no part in the life of the man that betrayed him. He selfishly kept the fact that katherine was still alive from stefa, jealous that his brother had also been turned by their shared lover. He stayed away for at least eighty years and immediately begins taunting his brother.
