• Abilities

  Very important note from the player: Beka does not have the Gift! The gift is something that's learned, whereas Beka's ability is just... there. She learned about it, how to control it, but she didn't learn anything that made it more powerful than it already was. In the final book, Mastiff, we learn that she has something called Wild Magic. You may recognize the name from another series of Tamora's, called The Immortals quartet. So there. Oh, also, in Mastiff... we learn that the Black God considers Beka his most precious priestess.   Pigeons, Messengers of the Black God

  Beka, along with many others on her father's side of the family, can hear the restless dead, ghosts that are riding pigeon-back because they were murdered, or killed in an otherwise violent way. Here are some of those that she sees a lot of during her time as a Dog.

  Names of Pigeons

  Slapper- Oh, Slapper... Slapper is a truly crazy pigeon, who loves nothing more than to fly at Beka and slap her with his wings, the little ingrate. He was the first pigeon Beka met, or it is assumed that he is. According to the second book, Bloodhound, he has carried 15 ghosts since she first met him at the Lord Provost's house. Beka thinks that, after all of the ghosts that he's carried, he's gone mad. He has the most common coloring of pigeons, with that blue-black tinge, and he's crippled, with a hunched back and a club foot. Don't let that fool you, though! He's probably the strongest of all of Beka's pigeon Birdies. Oh, lastly, he has these yellow eyes that are extremely creepy-looking. Trust me. They make him look as crazy as he is, which is definitely a hard thing to do.
  Ashes- Ashes is one of the newer pigeons, and he looks like he's been sprinkled in ashes, with his tail dipped in them. He was only present, as is the case with most of the birds that were named, other than Slapper, during the first book, Terrier. He carried the ghost of one of the diggers in the Opal Murders... which I'm not going to explain here. I'll put it under the Cases section, which will be found below on this page.
  Fog- Pale blue-grey, with a blue-green collar and dark wing tips. Another digger ghost.
  Inky- Mostly black, with some white feathers; very young; probably a former pet or messenger pigeon that escaped. The ghost of Rolond rides it, a little boy that was killed by the Shadow Snake. Again, will put it in the Cases section below.
  Mumper- Really dirty pigeon, hence the name. Carried the ghost of another digger... but this one told Beka who he was killed by, or a broad idea of it. A female mage with black teardrop tattoos on her face poisoned him. Black teardrops symbolize that the person has killed before... how many of them depends on how many victims.
  Pinky- A silver and dark pigeon whose wings were tipped in snowy white. Various random passengers, none of which were related to either cases she worked.
  Spangle- Spangled blue, green, and violet on white. Most likely a pet or a messenger that escaped.
  White Spice- No doubt that he was a pet. Very clean, very white, with copper-colored spots from the back of his neck to the middle of his wings. Carried another digger ghost. Yes, most of the named pigeons carry digger ghosts.

  
  

  Dust Spinners, Carriers of Speech

  Dust spinners are a complicated thing to explain, due to the fact that... well... its not really known, in the book, exactly what they are. Beka doesn't bother with that, because it doesn't really matter to her what they are, but, for your benefit, I'll... attempt to explain. Dust spinners are beings made up of wind (obviously), the bits and pieces that most winds pick up, like twigs, dirt, rocks, and other things... and spirits. No, I have no idea how they come to have spirits. They just do. Beka guesses that they're also part of the Black God's demesne. They can and do have basic feelings, though one notable spinner from Mastiff has very complex emotions, due to her age, and they seem to enjoy it when Beka comes, takes their burden of talk, and gives them dust from other parts of Corus/Port Caynn/wherever-else-she-may-get-dirt-from. One last quick fact about spinners in general: they don't pick up natural noises, like horse's hooves, dogs barking, birds chirping. Only humans talking, yelling, screaming, anything like that. Now here are the individual spinners and their information. Oh, one last note! All of the names are spelled correctly.

  Names of Dust Spinners

  Fess- Fess is without a doubt the absolute oldest spinner Beka has ever met. All other spinners just spin in place, not moving from where they are, and Beka can only hear them when she's inside them. Fess, however, is much different. As Beka was approaching her the one and only time she went inside, she could hear the things that Fess had picked up. Also, Fess could move. A lot. When Beka went inside her, Fess took Beka up to the nearby balcony. Also... Fess was completely and totally aware of everything around her. She spoke to Beka. I'm saying this candidly, I did not get this from the book... I think Fess may be the oldest dust spinner in the entire Mortal Realm. Honestly.
  Hasfush- Hasfush is probably the oldest spinner in the Lower City. Beka's five-times-great-grandfather spoke with him, in fact... so he most likely is. Hasfush was the one that first "introduced" Beka to the Opal Murders.
  Hesserrr- Hesserrr is one of the two Port Caynn spinners that Beka meets in Bloodhound. He's really old, maybe even older than Hasfush.
  Raaashell- Really young spinner, just came into existence during the book Terrier. 3 inches high and 6 inches wide.
  Shhasow- Spinner next to the Tradesman's kennel. She caught all of the noises from the kennel's torturing room, the screams, the pleading, which was more of a burden than other kinds of talk, so she kind of... went mad, I guess? Not really accurate, since she's not capable of that, but it fits the best out of any other words.

  Not done with this... for now, if you want to find out what happens in these, look it up. Only the two in Terrier have official names; the others I thought up myself.
