• The Creation of a Monster

  The Analogue Multiform Intelligence Mark One was created as a prototype, to test out one madman's ideas for a super-soldier. The theory involved blending human and animal DNA, mixing it with original organs harvested from the same bodies, then using a nanobot "fluid" as blood, to stitch the pieces together. The brain would be almost entirely human, but most of the rest of the body would be more animal than human.
  
  Unable to get official funding for his research, Dr. Ego McCrazypants (possibly not his real name) went underground. He bought a black jaguar from a private collector, paid hunters to go after a wolf, and then searched for a human donor. He wanted a female, for docility, and an outsider, so that his workers wouldn't revolt over being used for spare parts. It took some time, and a couple of private investigators, but he eventually found a suitably mousy woman, in good general health, who had no living family or close friends. It was easy to arrange for her disappearance.
  
  And so AMI(Mk1) was born, with the remains of three corpses on one side of her, and a gleeful mad scientist on the other. Little wonder that her first voluntary action was to try to run away. AMI has been trying to escape ever since.
  
  At first, her mash-up of a body was quite fragile, and her shape-shifting limited to slightly altering the shape of her hands and feet. She retained most of her procedural and semantic memory, which is to say, she knew how to use doors, and could understand English. Speaking was difficult as it required her to shift her mouth and throat to almost fully human, and this was impossible for her at first. However, every time AMI sustained an injury, the repairs from the nanobots would blend her conflicting DNA more tightly. The mad doctor took this as a sign that he should begin combat training early, and AMI spent her days in a series of deadly obstacle courses. It transpired that the faster her heart pumped, and the more adrenaline she had in her system, the more effective the healing. For a time, it seemed as though the torture would never end.
  
  After three months, with AMI's body now in good condition, and her shifting becoming better each day, she decided to end it. Her escape attempts had been thwarted, only resulting in injuries which enhanced her usefulness, and she could see no end to the suffering. At the next test, she deliberately took a crushing blow to the head, hoping that she had finally done more damage than the nanobots could repair. It almost worked.
  
  She woke on the slab, not in her cell, and she couldn't remember her name. Her real name, not the one the crazy doctor had given her. She knew that 'AMI' was only a description, and that she had a name, but she couldn't remember it. She also couldn't remember what she'd done to get so badly injured, although she thought it likely that a test had gone wrong somehow. She remembered the tests.
  
  A testing accident seemed most likely, because she woke to the sound of the doctor berating one of the clipboard-carrying observers; demanding to know how it had happened, and why the test hadn't been stopped in time. She caught the words "irreparable damage" and "mindless savage", although that last could have been referring to the hapless observer. As the doctor ranted, and his employee cringed, AMI came up with a plan.
  
  She began to under-perform in the tests, carefully reducing her scores. Her speech became broken, and finally she stopped talking altogether. As she had hoped, the doctor blamed her failing performance on her head injury, and fired the whole testing department in a fit of pique. He threw himself into research, and fired his assistants when they couldn't find the answers he wanted. At last, he only had janitorial workers, and AMI lay in her cell, like a discarded toy. To her annoyance, though, he left the CCTV camera trained on her, night and day.
  
  In his paranoia, the madman guessed that AMI was faking her condition. He became obsessed with catching her out, meaning that AMI had to almost hypnotise herself into maintaining the façade. New guards were hired to patrol her area, and not told that she was supposed to be intelligent. The nameplate on her cell had been scratched out in fury by the frustrated McCrazypants, leaving only the "Mk" legible. The guards took to referring to the creature in the cells as "Mack", and speculating about why the boss would keep his pet beast in a cell.
