One third of the population of the Dominican Republic lived in Santo Domingo, 65 percent of which resided in slum neighborhoods. Together with her mother and older brother, Victor, they lived in an impoverished barrio just outside the city center. Over 70,000 people filled the 2 kilometer radius of the Cristo Rey sector slum, the overcrowding and low socioeconomic status of the residents making it a breeding ground for crime, drug addiction, alcoholism, prostitution, high rates of mental illness and suicide. The narrow streets were littered with trash and running with dirty water, crude little shanties topped with tin roofs slanting in rows together like drunks with their arms over each other’s shoulders. Old women sat in broken chairs on the corners, shouting obscenities at the shameful young men turned thugs who sold rocks of gank just feet away. Everyone knew not to buy from them, especially their mother, who made sure to get her gear uptown. While their mother was turning tricks and freebasing, Helenea and her brother would often take Polaroid pictures of the tourists to sell back to them, always paired with overpriced postcards and cheap trinkets, stationing themselves outside local historical landmarks like the Catedral Santa Maria La Menor, the Alcazar de Colon, the Museo de las Casas Reales... Anywhere the two of them could find unsuspecting sightseers to rifle through their pockets before the Policia Turistica came wielding their batons to chase the children off. Her brother would occasionally hide loose change from their mother when turning in the day's earnings, using it to buy Helenea an apple-flavored soda, which she'd share with him while they ran under the sun along the dirty Rio Isabela river's walkways. They'd always save the bottles to recycle for a few cents. Just after Helenea's ninth birthday, her mother met a man named Rodrigo. She was still attractive enough to work in the middle class brothels of the colonial zone and he had come to see her several times, each time leaving her with the proposition of a better life and a tip large enough for her to remember him by. All that she had to do was help him with a little shipment. It didn't take long for him to convince her that the price to be paid was well worth it. Her only condition was that she be allowed to bring her two children, 13-year-old Victor and 9-year-old Helenea, a condition which only served to benefit Rodrigo and thus he raised no qualms on the matter. After all, travelling mothers and their children were far less suspicious. In the end, after less than a week of preparation, the three of them were on a plane with one carry-on each and stuffed to the gills with small, tightly-packed balloons of heroin, headed for the States. Rodrigo had provided Paloma, Victor and Helenea with round-trip tickets, only intending for them to be gone several days under the guise of visiting family. But as soon as the plane took off from the Joaquin Balaguer International Airport and she watched their small, sunny island disappear into the sea through the window, Paloma already knew she was never coming back.
