• Republic City's Finest

  Known often by reputation and seldom by name, Kyungjin "Hawkeye" Gao is a metalbending detective for the Republic City Police Department. The straight-laced sort, a fair-skinned stiff with a hard face and harder eyes, no-nonsense in personality and attire. Hardworking to a fault, cool as the steel of his uniform, loyal like any dog worth his badge. A real man of the people, everything you'd expect from the city's finest; less, depending on who you ask. But things are hardly ever what they seem. He didn't look the part of a man working vice --how could he with a pink hairtie?-- but he certainly had his vices. Everyone had a past and Gao's started with a pai sho tile and a million yuan smile that suckers were born for.
  
  Two years ago, back when 'detective' was still 'officer', he was one of those suckers. Bittersweet breaks in one too many a case led to an all-too-promising beat cop working undercover at an upscale lounge taking upscale money. A bunch of movers and shakers in town were keen on playing for high stakes behind closed doors, and so was Gao-- literally. He spent eighteen months working the tables at the White Jade, making eyes at a sultry fan dancer and building a case against her beau, Kyuzo "The Furnace". What went down exactly in that grand game of cat and mouse was anyone's guess, but the cop came out on top. Almost. Slick guys always got the girl in the movers, but this wasn't the cinema and Gao walked away from a successful sting with a promotion and a new set of problems.
  
  Mountains of paperwork, distrust from a few on the force, a fondness for the thrill of wallowing in the city's underbelly came with the change in uniform. And with good reason. Few waded through murky waters and came out clean, and he was no exception. For all the applause that followed his meteoric rise through the ranks, all the accolades for his accomplishments, he wasn't quite the stand-up guy he claimed to be. Tough cases bred tough cops and he picked up far too many tricks of an unsavory trade for comfort. There were things he'd done that he was not proud of, even for vice, but he'd grown accustomed to it. The ends justify the means and all that jazz. And that brought him to the present, a good cop with bad habits and a penchant for finding trouble where it ought to be left alone.
  
  The city never slept. Why should he?
