...Many miles underground lives a despicable race of elves whose skin is as dark as the sins they commit, and their hair as shallow in color as their capability for true feelings. Exiled many millennia ago by their own kin for worshipping the wicked spider goddess known as Lolth, these ebon-skinned beings were called Drow. Endlessly plotting against one another, using every opportunity for betrayal; there was no room for weaknesses such as love or unity within the hearts of two people, much less the preposterous idea of a family.
However, against all rhyme, or reason there was such a family within the Underdark. This was the family of little Vehaan Braylin, his nurturing mother, Maiyuinn, and his caring father, Elendar; who together formed House Miriel. Within shadows, there had been the timid rising of a moon-guardian deity known as Eilistraee who gave her favor to any Drow seeking good and the peaceful existence of those who dwell within the Underdark. Maiyuinn and Elendar had formed a sacred bond under such graces, and together had been blessed with the sweet, blue-eyed boy they'd named Vehaan.
Strict decree within Chuassilin's borders demand that all first-born sons within a House be sacrificed to their prominant spider goddess as a show of loyalty. However, Maiyuinn and Elendar had no loyalty for the evil deity, or her priestesses; nor did they have any intention of relinquishing their only living offspring. Under the safety of their protective wings, Vehaan grew a happy six and a half years of age before his father was called away to The Surface in threat of a possible ambush to his celebrated Goddess of the Moon. Without Elendar at the homestead to help guard the forbidden hoarding of their son, Maiyuinn was subject to scrutinizing and spying inquiries from her estranged sister, Mez'Barris and other related kin.
Mez'Barris was a woman easily weakened by vanity and lust, and her younger, more beautiful sister was a great source of envy. To discover that her youthful and naive sibling was committing such an atrocious crime of treason by allowing her first born son to live pleased her greatly, and quickly she set plans of ruin and theft into motion. Only a few short weeks after Elandar's departure, did Maiyuinn receive the knock upon her door that would doom her and her family for hundreds of years.
Her elder sister stood there in her open doorway, the tall and lanky woman with unrly hair sneering down upon the lovely young mother; an unmistakable upcurl of immense satisfaction in her thin lips as she told the gentle woman about how she and her son were to be publically executed as an example to the other followers of Eilistraee, and all else who would think themselves clever enough to escape the decree of the Sacrificial Firstborn. Disbelief struck dear Maiyuinn first, unable to fathom how even her own sister had no qualms about betraying her and her family. But panic set in shortly after, and she begged the wretched waif of a woman to spare her only child.
With an all-too-arrogant grin upon her sharp features, Mez'Barris offered her fretful sister the opportunity to spare him, if mother willingly gave her son over to the elder sister as property, and agreed to her own body as a replacement sacrifice. A high priestess of the Moon Goddess was sure to grant the bitter Mez'Barris high favor with Lolth, after all. Eager to agree to anything that would spare her most precious boy's life, even if it meant intense misery, she drifted into her modest home to scoop him from a peaceful slumber as she said a final, desperate prayer to her patron deity. "Help me, Moon Dancer Eilistraee. Preserve my dearest treasure, so that he might endure this fate of pain until he is able to find happiness once more."
It was the last thing Maiyuinn ever said out loud, but it was the last thing she ever needed to say. Eilistraee had heard her loyal servant's plea, and as mother moved to embrace the warm, sleeping body of her son a final time; her mortal body broke into thousands of Lunar Flower petals. It is said that merely a single petal from a Lunar Flower can grant a mortal lifetime of pristine health and longevity; and now a swarm of them covered the sleeping babe, absorbing into his soft skin. His body fortified and his innocent heart protected, the boy's blue eyes peeped lazily open, one after the other, to reveal such flawless and intense pools of light, that his gaze pierced the darkness. Such gorgeous depths of sapphire were so striking, that the impatient Mez'Barris was instantly drawn to them.
Having not a clue where her coward of a younger sister had fled to, she gathered the confused and struggling boy and declared his title that of Ssussun; 'light' in Undercommon. Frustratingly angered that she'd allowed her sister's escape, and thus her chance at favor with the Spider Goddess, the tyrant of an aunt filled her every day with attempting to somehow taint that flawless set of crystalline eyes; subjecting little Ssussun to almost every form of punishment imaginable. Unspeakable were the violations bestowed upon such a sweet-natured boy, but he endured them all and remained a nearly unstoppable force of defiance. Secretly, in the abandoned caves that weave through the confines of his modest city, Ssussun studied the arts of arcane, black magic, and demonic manipulation.
Nearly an entire century passed before the young war mage was powerful enough to make a strike. Years he spent planning and plotting in silence, until one evening he crept through the shadows and corners of the brothel that was his home, and slaughtered every other living thing within its confines. Harnessing the power of demonic energies, he fed on their darkness as he crawled through cave and tunnel alike- knowing the only way he could go was upwards. Finally, after days of exhaustive climbing, and several narrow escapes from many a dangerous creature; Ssussun found the intense, satisfying pain that came with seeing the bright star that lit The Surface for the very first time. With eyes squinted, he squirmed his way out of the last bit of Earth, and found himself standing free amongst a new world. Not a glance was spared backwards as he began to walk his tired body forwards... Ahead into his new life of opportunity, without even a thought of ever going back.
