• Biography

  As a young man he came from a smaller tribe of the Choctaw. He had two older brothers who were very strong, and had even been among those who fought with Morgan during the Revolution.His eldest brother died during the war, but he and the second eldest returned after fighting had ended. He discovered his powers as a child. He thought he heard the water speaking in his own tongue to him. As he leaned over it to hear, he misstepped and was about to fall in, when the waters themselves rose up and pushed back onto the shore. His father, having seen this, declared him a lshtahullo, a person blessed by Nanapesa with the gift of calling to their sacred rivers. He was trained as a healer, and regarded as prophet for his ability to hear the water and know when both allies and enemies were coming. He had had once a wife, and children of his own, strong sons and daughters who had grown up to become respected members of the tribe, though none seemed to have inherited his gift. One night, as he was sitting by the banks and listening to the river, he heard a second voice from the water. When he went to investigate, he discovered a woman with pale trout skin. He knew what it was immediately but before he could banish the Okwa Naholo, she had turned and her gaze caused him to drop his pouches and his knife. She took him and turned him into an Okwa Naholo, and once removed from the sun, he was also cut off from the sound of the water. As she held him against his will for many years he could not hear the river's voice anymore. It wasn't until a more powerful being than her destroyed her that he'd been freed, and could hear the river's voice again, though now it was but faint whispers. This 'Master' told him what he really was, gave it the name 'vampire' and taught him about the customs of his 'people', and even helped him find out the fate of his nation and his family. Alone now, he begrudingly allowed this male to help him. La'ioka left the cities in 1902, and went to live in the small town of Chiwapa, where he slept in a deep dug burial mound during the day, and spent most nights by the river. He ventured out to feed rarely, and until vampires became legal citizens, he tended to drink from unlucky, wayward hunters. Not long ago he heard the river's voice speak again, more clearly than it had spoken to him since his death. It told him that a city across the Great River was being ruled by a being who though like him could only live at night, was able to speak to the sun through fire! Intrigued, he stood and followed the streams until he came to the Mississippi and crossed its great depths, for the water, as it had in his youth, moved for him to allow him passage. He stopped only to cover himself and sleep in the day. As he entered New Orleans, he'd receive stares of fear and surprise.
