    Phoebus Lux was born to a centaur family in the Wyrding Woods, near a community of human refugees that had settled down in the forest to rebuild their village after a war destroyed their old one. The humans didn't know that these extremely territorial centaurs called this forest home.

    When the road-weary humans made contact with the centaurs, the infuriated centaur Chief ordered them to leave. The leader of the human settlers -- a tall, enigmatic man -- bowed his head submissively and agreed to the terms. That night, however, instead of leaving, the human warriors, led by their cunning leader, sneaked into the centaur camp and murdered most of the tribe in its sleep. When the centaurs awoke, they broke into a rage and fought to avenge their dead, but the humans outnumbered them 10:1. All of the adult centaurs were slaughtered, leaving behind only Phoebus -- still in his infancy -- and his sister.

    The humans decided to raise them both because they knew the centaurs would be valuable later in life as exotic slaves, or at the very least trophy pets. They didn't expect their leader to take a liking to the centaur siblings, and to become so enamored with them that he would treat them as his own children, teaching them archery and swordplay.

    When Phoebus and his sister came of age, they were allowed to perform the rite of the warriors -- and to go out in the woods to hunt. They found the remains of their old village. Phoebus was too young to remember much, but the memories came crashing back for his sister. There was nothing he could do to stymie her rage -- she'd always been the more hotheaded one -- but he would not allow her to slaughter their human family in revenge. Furious, she spat in his face and called him a traitor, before riding away into the woods. She never returned to the village, and after some time, Phoebus found that he could no longer stay.

    So he galloped away into the night, leaving with no fanfare but with the quiet whisper of a goodbye and a note left on the human leader's desk. He left the village, left the forest, and entered the open road, looking to see if the wider world reflected the heartbreak and deception he had found in his own small one.
