  • Personality: Shy and sweet, Verity generally cares about people. However, she does have a vindicative streak and is easily jealous. She tries to hide it under layers of sweetness and is ashamed of her flaws. She is very private and leans towards being pessimistic. She is curious and creative.

• Description

  Physical Description: 16 year old Verity tends to blend into her surroundings. Shoulders often curled forward slightly with the weight of her bag and her own uncertainty, her large, deep-set russet brown eyes often hidden in the shadow of her downturned face. Her hair is short, barely reaching below her large ears, and made of tight, springy curls. Soft features and a slight body with few sharp angles help her fade into the shadows. She has deep brown skin that tends to be rather dry; you can usually smell a sweet lotion hanging around her. Verity also uses a magical perfume (vanilla and rose scented) that hangs around all day, even in the rain. If she caught your eye, she would blush and look down. You can usually see her fiddling her fingers together. She wears thin, oval glasses.
  
  Personality: With a shy disposition, Verity often finds herself listening more than talking; however, that is okay by her. She likes to listen and loves the trust that others lend her when they share their secrets and lives with her. She genuinely cares about people and has a very helpful and kind nature. Her shyness often results in her struggling to make real bonds and friendships, leaving her feeling lonely and left out. As a result, she is rather jealous of the few close friends she has and is terrified of losing them. She is loyal to those who are loyal to her. She has a vindictive streak and will not hesitate to cut those who betray her out of her life. She considers her jealousy and vindictiveness her worst traits and tries to hide it as much as possible under layers of sweetness. Verity is very private and dislikes people prying into her life, seeing it as her business and no one else's. Verity has problems setting major goals for herself and knowing how to get there. She leans more towards the pessimistic side. She’ll get a vague idea of what she wants (to be less jealous/to help people) but have no idea how to actually do it. However, she is very determined when she does have a clear end goal and mission in mind, and will do her very best to fulfill that goal, whether it be becoming head girl, accomplishing a new spell, or finding her cat, wherever it happened to wander off to. She is also curious and creative, though this can lead into being nosey and occasionally catastrophic thinking. Her ultimate goal is to be a potions’ mistress for St. Mungos, as she fell in love with Potions from her first lesson at Hogwarts. Before Potions, she wanted to either be a chef, Herbologist, or healer. By brewing and inventing Potions for the hospital, she could still help people and be creative while engaging her passion for Potions. She isn’t a prodigy or even especially talented, but it is something that comes fairly easily to her, boosting her often low-confidence.

• Biography

  Verity was born to a halfblood Irish mother and English muggle father. Until she was six years old, she was raised in Islington, a busy borough of London, when her father moved to Westminster for his work. The move happened quickly and rather unexpectedly for a six year old, and she found herself often homesick. She was much shyer as a young child and was easily pushed around by the other, more boisterous children. Eventually, she began to make friends by simply being kind and helping out other kids. She became known for giving advice and being willing to listen- though that occasionally came back to bite her when people would try to take advantage of her kindness to get something from her. She eventually grew a little more confident by the time she was nine. She attended a muggle school until she was ten, when her mother pulled her out to better prepare her for Hogwarts and homeschooled her. At first, Verity was upset and angry, having finally opened up from her shell a bit and made best friends, but later became very intrigued by everything her mother taught her. She originally fixated on her mother’s job as a healer, wishing to help people and seeing that as the only way. She proved to have a quick mind for facts and memorization, helping her with her then-current goal of becoming a healer, and later a Potions mistress. Her anxiety grew as she grew closer to turning eleven, her main fear being that no one would like her at Hogwarts and that she would fail everything. Her mother got a group of magical kids around her age together, including her best friends Emma and Rose, both daughters of her mother’s friends, and Dennis Creevey, whose older brother was at Hogwarts and would be attending the year after Verity went to Hogwarts. This eased her worry a bit and later made it easier for her to talk to other people, knowing she had friends behind her.
  Once at Hogwarts, she was sorted into Hufflepuff, surprising no one. Rose was sorted into Gryffindor and Emma into Hufflepuff with her. The three girls made a pact to not let House rivalries break up their friendship. While it shook a few times throughout the years, it managed to hold even when Hogwarts was taken over by Death Eaters. Verity struggled through Defense Against the Dark Arts and Transfiguration, the latter destroying her dreams at being a Healer. She did decently well in Charms and History, though where she really excelled was Potions and Herbology. She was the best Hufflepuff in Potions and near the top in Herbology as well. Like many of the top Herbology students, she was allowed to work in the greenhouses under supervision of either the teacher or older students, something she leapt on. There, she originally was very shy, but eventually started pesting Neville Longbottom for tips after they got over each other’s confidence issues. She began to look up to him like a brother and was devastated when he disappeared into the bowels of Hogwarts towards the end of her fifth year (during the Second Wizarding War). She thought the Triwizard Tournament was a stupid idea and only went to the tasks because her friends wanted her to (plus she thought it was scary, as she was a second year at the time). However, she was disappointed she couldn’t go to the Yule Ball, as she loves dancing and dressing up. The aftermath of the third task gave her nightmares for months. While she wasn’t friends with Cedric, she talked to him often and he helped her out with her transfiguration homework. He was a very good prefect and like many of the younger years, Verity idealized and looked up to him. Having never really faced death before, Verity found her naivete shaken and experienced grief for the first time. She also felt guilty about grieving because she felt she didn’t have the right, as she wasn’t one of Cedric’s friends. From then on, her dementors would show her the dead body of Cedric until her fifth year, when it changed to herself and her friends casting dark spells and having dark spells casted on herself.
  Her third and fourth year passed in a blur. Her parents argued about whether Voldemort had really returned and if Verity shouldn’t be pulled out of school and sent to somewhere like Beauxbatons or America. Her father leaned towards the ‘Harry Potter is lying’ side and keeping Verity in Britain while her mother believed Potter and Dumbledore and advocated moving her out of Britain- in fact, advocated moving the entire family out of the UK. Eventually, Verity’s father won the school arrangement argument and Verity could stay. However, she found herself split on both ends of whether to believe Voldemort was back. Both her parents had good points and she trusted them both. Due to Rose and Emma believing him, she eventually was converted. Fourth year was mostly her and her friends studying, keeping Dennis and Rose from trying to hit on Harry Potter, and trying to get Slughorn’s attention so she could get references to Potions masters to train under. She only got two detentions from Umbridge for spilling an ink pot and getting caught supporting Potter while talking to her friends before class. She was careful not to get detention again and never told anyone about the quills.
  Fifth year was difficult. Verity’s determination to help people clashed with her cowardice and she found herself at odds with her friends when they needed to be united most. Gryffindors Rose and Dennis were actively involved in the rebellion of the students while Hufflepuffs Verity and Emma preferred to hang back and simply help out students in a more passive way. Verity and Rose in particular had a very large argument that ended in Verity nearly destroying their friendship and Rose pushing her and calling her a coward. Emma managed to salvage things, but the friendship was hanging by a thread. Then, in Dark Arts, Verity was commanded to cast the Cruciatus on Rose and she refused. Rose was then commanded to cast the Cruciatus on Verity and she also refused. Both girls were then used as test subjects for the rest of the class, with a few others joining when they refused as well. However, the torture broke Verity’s resolve to not harm anyone and she later casted other Dark spells on classmates. Eventually, she grew so upset at herself that she joined the rebellion as a healer and potion maker. OWLs and NEWTs were delayed until the next year. As she was underage, Verity didn’t participate in the Battle of Hogwarts, but she was one of the last young students to get to safety, as she was in a bathroom when the battle started, sick with the flu and stress. She witnessed enough of the battle to stick in her nightmares by the time she got to safety. In all the chaos after the end of the war and her own sickness, she ended up not eating for almost a week and nearly died between that and fever. That summer was spent focusing on potions and herbology as a way to calm herself and work at healing.
