Talents and Quirks ♦
- Mataio grew up practicing the art of siva afi, also known as the Samoan fire knife dance. Though he abandoned it in favor of focusing his talents on surfing, he still maintains an above average hand-eye coordination from the art.
- Being a professional surfer, Mataio's sense of balance is also above average. He's an incredibly strong swimmer as a result of having to fight the waves.
- Despite having acclimated to living in the United States, Mataio still maintains a sense of Fa'a Samoa, or the Samoan traditional way of life. Some quirks include the following: the reservation of Sunday as a day of relaxation, removing shoes before entering a home, and depending on the circumstance, the giving of gifts at gatherings.
- Mataio's talent in surfing means that he hasn't only done well in contests for prize money, but it has also won him the attention of several sponsors, his main source of income. The sponsors are for well known surf brands, and those knowledgable in the sport would likely know who Mataio is. For those less privy, they may recognize him based off television or in-store ads featuring him along with his sponsored brand of choice. (Occasionally clothing as well - think of brands such as Billabong or Hurley.) -
Home Sweet Home ♦
Mataio makes enough to afford himself a comfortable living. He downsized from a larger house to a smaller loft after his divorce. It's a large, open concept loft that is modern industrial mixed with a bit of a rustic feel to offset the cold modernization. It is mostly in tones of brown, white, and gray, with pops of orange - his favorite color - thrown in.
