  Arden is used to being a Master, because his family always had a neko slave. Sometimes, the slave would die because they were overworked or sick, or his parents would boot them out into the streets because they got too old. The slave could be as young as 7 years old, but once they reached 19 they were considered too old. The slave could be male or female, his parents weren't picky about it. Arden's parents treated their slaves with no respect and would rarely tend to them if they were sick or starving. Arden had always grown up with slaves, and had even fallen in love with one of the family slaves when he was 15 and she was 17, but she was soon booted out because of the flirtatious movements towards his sister. Because of this, he learned how hard this life was. He now still lives with nekos(whether they are a slave or just a butler/maid/companion), though he tends to them and treats them kindly with respect.
